AW17 Key trend: Red

When it comes to fashion, Autumn-Winter has got to be my favourite time of year. I love wrapping myself up in a statement coat with a chunky scarf and ankle boots. Somehow, I always tend to wear short skirts more during the cold season than I do during the summer, I just love how they look with a longline coat (although I don’t like them so much when I’m shivering waiting for delayed trains).

As you may have seen from my Instagram stories and twitter feed, Gracechurch centre in Sutton Coldfield recently sent me on a mission to search for this season’s hottest trend, Red. They sent me off with a complimentary £100 gift card so I headed straight to my favourite high-street stores, New Look, River Island, H&M and Topshop to pick out a red outfit to wear over the festive season.

the river island red halter neck dress

The first shop on my radar was River Island, the window display featured a tartan print jacket and a chunky polo neck jumper which got my attention. Inside I found many other statement reds pieces, from embellished slogan tees, a gorgeous smart longline coat, ‘the trophy blouse’, plenty of red accessories and some red velvet boots.

Despite there being so many fabulous statement red items what really caught my eye was a lonely ‘Red tie back high neck bodycon dress' from the sale rail reduced to just £20, so I instantly grabbed a black biker jacket and went to try it on. As you can see it’s a lovely dress perfect for the festive season and will certainly show off those curves. It would go great with black strappy heels, statement earrings and a black biker jacket. River Island always do stunning evening dresses this time of year so I’ll be popping in again to see what they have next.

the new look red pu mini skirt

Next on my radar was New Look, I spotted red chunky knit sweaters, ribbed v-neck tops and 90s slogan cropped jumpers. In the window they had a wine-hued PU mini skirt paired with a white good times slogan t-shirt and ankle boots. So, I just had to buy it as it’s me all over, I love the edgy look and I knew it would go great with a check print coat I had my eye on in River Island. As much as I wanted the stunning red dress, I had to go for the leather-look skirt as I will be able to get a lot more wear out of it and wear it different ways.

During my shopping trip at Gracechurch centre I also visited Topshop where I spotted a beautiful floral red blouse and a sporty Adidas top. The final shop I popped in was H&M where I found red ruffle blouses, lace midi skirts and a cropped slogan hoody perfect for any rock chick.

Shopping the red fashion trend

Bright red ‘tomato’ shades may not be for everyone, they can be difficult to pull off. But if you really want to wear the key trend this season I would suggest starting with a flattering red ruffle sleeve blouse with a v-neck neckline paired with tight black skinny jeans and strappy heels or even a statement red longline coat (New Look have one for £34.99 and River Island £80) that you can dress up or down taking you to work through to the evening for those cheeky after work drinks this festive season.

If you want to avoid wearing a bright red shade altogether, opt for a subtle wine-hued shade instead, it’s the most universally flattering of all the red tones. To see more photos from my shopping trip and the items that caught my eye head over to my Facebook page.
