When daily life starts to feel a bit too routine, it’s only natural to get a craving for a quick getaway. A slight change of scenery can do wonders for your mood. Sometimes you just need to travel somewhere to let go and de-stress.
So, whether craving a break from the daily grind or simply fancying a change of scenery, a spontaneous getaway can be the perfect remedy. From relaxing beach retreats to cultural city breaks, here are five destinations ideal for a last-minute holiday with no itinerary required.
1. Crete, Greece
If you're after sun, sea, and a touch of history, Crete ticks all the boxes. As Greece’s largest island, it offers everything from pristine beaches and mountain villages to ancient ruins and lively tavernas.
If you’d like to explore a beach with a difference, Elafonisi in the southwestern corner of the island shouldn’t be missed. With pink sands, turquoise waters and sloping sand dunes, you can easily while away an afternoon relaxing in this picturesque landscape.
For hiking enthusiasts, Samaria Gorge offers a 16km trail along one of Europe’s longest canyons.
2. Budapest, Hungary
For a city break with a difference, Budapest is a brilliant choice. Split by the Danube, the city blends striking architecture with thermal baths, vibrant nightlife, and cosy cafés.
Széchenyi Baths is one of the largest bath complexes in Europe and offers visitors a range of thermal pools to relax in. With a restaurant, relaxation areas and a terrace, there’s enough to keep you occupied for a full day. If you want to visit the baths for something a little different, plan to visit on a Saturday night when the baths transform into a ‘sparty’ with a DJ and light show.
3. Antalya, Turkey
Perfect for a last-minute holiday if you crave sunshine, Antalya combines turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs, and a rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re strolling through the charming old town of Kaleiçi or lounging on a beach with a cocktail in hand, this Turkish gem offers all the ingredients for a spontaneous escape without the stress.
For those travellers who love to shop, Antalya Bazaar is a must-visit. Mingle with locals as you barter for souvenirs and take in the colours and sounds of the Bazaar. If golf is your go-to, Montgomerie Maxx Royal Golf Course is a popular choice for holiday and pro golfers, set in 104 hectares of beautiful scenery.
4. Oslo, Norway
For something a little different, Oslo delivers fresh Nordic air and modern Scandinavian vibes. Compact and scenic, the Norwegian capital is ideal for spontaneous exploration - think fjords, stylish coffee shops, and striking museums. It's the kind of place where you can do as much or as little as you
like, and still feel refreshed. If you want to live like a local, head to the harbour to participate in the urban sauna culture. Choose a sauna, take in the heat and then cool off with a cold swim.
No trip to Oslo is complete without going on a boat trip through the fjords. Visit in summer to see lush green scenery or in winter to see snow-capped peaks, with a chance to see the northern lights.
5. Cinque Terre, Italy
If you're longing for postcard views and romantic charm, Cinque Terre is a dream come true. This cluster of colourful coastal villages clinging to cliffs above the Ligurian Sea is perfect for a spur-of-the-moment Italian escape.
The best way to travel between the Italian villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare is by train, which runs every 15-20 minutes during the day. Driving is to be avoided, with narrow streets and very limited parking.
Hiking between villages is also popular, with the most famous walk being the Via dell'Amore, a 1km walk from Riomaggiore to Manarola. For a more challenging hike, Telegrafo to Volastra on the Sentiero Azzurro path offers 9.7km of trail. To relax, savour seafood by the water, and watch the sunset with a glass of local wine.
