How to Design a Living Space That Celebrates Your Love of Music
Music is an incomparable joy. It’s a transportive thing, whether you’re playing it or listening to it; afundamentally transformative medium, that can carry you to new places and new feelings just as much as itcan help you revisit the old. As someone for whom good music means a great deal, it’s no surprise that you want your home to represent this simple, fathoms-deep fact.
And it’s my great joy to tell you that incorporating your passion for music into your home décor is extremely easy. Music and music artwork lend themselves exceedingly well to home decoration, as do the accoutrements that enable their enjoyment. Here then, you’ll find some helpful tips on blending style, comfort andfunctionality to create a home environment that truly reflects your interest.
1. Create a Dedicated Space for Listening
If you don’t already have a dedicated space for listening to music in your home, it’s time to make one. The benefits of a dedicated listening space are self-evident, of course; you have a single-purpose space that allowsyou to engage full-throatedly with your favourite music, without being distracted by other responsibilities oraspects of your home. However, having a dedicated space also means you have a shrine to music that uplifts your home even when not in use; if you’re not in it, you’re looking at it!
This space is easy enough to construct, too. All you need is an alcove in which to place some hi-fi equipment, acomfortable chair, a headphone rest and some storage for your music. Even if you have a main home hi-fi already, a secondary system for intentional headphone listening can be a great addition – and all the better ifyou have an excuse to show off your vinyl records next to it.
2. Display Your Collection as Part of Your Décor
In fact, your vinyl can have a wider impact on the feel of your home as it relates to music. 12” vinyl records arelarge enough that their album artworks can stand on their own; with some small, narrow shelves, you candisplay your record artworks proudly on the wall without having to render them inaccessible for listening.
Even if you have a glut of records – too many to display at once – there’s still some allure to seeing the volumeof your collection in shelving. Square shelves are the ideal home for a record collection, and a great way to add three-dimensionality to your home too.
3. Add Personal Touches That Reflect Your Musical Taste
It’s not just your physical media that can reflect your taste, either. Everything from band posters and lyric sheets to gig tickets and swiped setlists can be part and parcel of your music-centric living-room patchwork. Frame these, and pair them with ambient lighting for an irrepressibly cool vibe!
