M&S High Summer Collection preview
Marks and Spencer need no introduction they have been a high street staple for over a century and have gone from strength to strength with their extensive offering of premium food, homeware, beauty and lingerie to name a few. Last year I experienced their fantastic seasonal range of M&S Christmas & New Year’s Eve food by putting on a celebratory dinner and buffet at home with the family. However, this year to mark the new season I was invited to M&S Birmingham to try on their new High Summer Collection of clothing and accessories and to pick a few gifted pieces to take home.
As there are two floors filled with women’s clothing, lingerie, shoes, accessories, nightwear, swimwear and beauty I needed a little help to sort my way through the fantastic SS19 collection. So, the lovely M&S style team selected items based on my personal style, shape, size and preferences and kindly presented them to me on a rail in the fitting rooms.
The M&S Fit & Style service is available to everyone to help you find an outfit for a special occasion, or if you're inspired to explore a whole new look than the trained style advisors at M&S are there to find an outfit that fits and suits you perfectly. You can either book a free styling appointment online or ask in store for details. I was paired with the lovely Angie from the Birmingham store, who just made the experience that extra bit special.
M&S Womenswear consists of two brands Autograph and Per Una alongside the M&S Collection range. Autograph is their most premium high-quality range of clothing with statement pieces made of mostly cashmere, silk, leather and suede. The new Autograph collection oozes effortless sophistication with its softly tailored blazer & trouser combos, crisp white shirts and modern blouses in flattering fits and neutral hues. While there’s a lot of elegant block colour pieces there are also many prints in stripe, check, animal and leaf.
I have so many favourites from the Autograph line, but I especially loved this Pure Cotton Double Breasted Trench Coat . Trenches are the perfect go-to for a very British Spring-Summer transition of scorching weather one day and chilly the next. The Autograph dresses were gorgeous too, from relaxed midi dresses to an eye-catching strappy satin midi slip with an asymmetric skirt in a beautiful shimmering teal shade.
While the Per Una Summer Collection has everyday feminine pieces that can be thrown together to create simple yet stylish outfits with personality. The Per Una brand is also more affordable with the items being made from mostly linen, polyester and 100% sustainably sourced cotton.
It was great having someone else pick out a selection of clothing on my behalf, as it made me explore new styles, colours and prints that I wouldn’t usually go for. Like this Tiered Floral Print Maxi Shirt Dress . I noticed the dress on the mannequin as soon as I walked into the Birmingham store and thought it looked great but it’s a style that I would assume from just looking wouldn’t suit me but having tried it on I was pleasantly surprised. I also really loved the Pure Linen Checked Midi Relaxed Dress which made me feel Pretty Woman movie vibes. It’s also a dress my partner complimented me on too with it being flattering on a curvy body shape. So, from now on I’m going to start being more adventurous when it comes to trying on clothes and step out of my fashion comfort zone to adapt to unfamiliar shades, prints and shapes, but make them my own so I still look and feel like me.
When it comes to dresses, styles that I would automatically go for are ones like this flirty Polka Dot Wrap Midi Dress from the M&S Collection range paired with strappy sandals and a faux leather jacket.
The selection of items I picked to take home with me was mostly from the M&S Collection which I thought was really stylish and well-priced for the top-quality pieces. Especially this high rise slip midi skirt for £35 that comes in four shades, I took home the dark magenta one and I can’t wait to dress it for the night with a black lace camisole and embellished clutch and down for the day with a slogan t-shirt and statement jewellery.
M&S have a very popular denim range, last year they sold 10 pairs of jeans every minute! And I’m not surprised because when I spotted these super comfortable relaxed yet flattering denim jeans with a high rise and distressed ankle grazer hemline worn by the mannequin, I just had to try them on, and instantly fell in love. They are made of 99% cotton and 1% elastane so have the perfect amount of stretch without being rugged and tight. They are from the Autograph range and cost just £45 and make a great investment piece that I can dress up and down with pretty much everything in my wardrobe.
I took the jeans home along with this Per Una Relaxed ¾ sleeve Shirt in cream, which I tied around the waist and styled with this Assortment Bead Long Necklace and Ankle Strap Sandals in orhre. I also tried on this midi denim dress with cute ruffle sleeves, but I also love the Denim Mini Shirt Dress worn by Holly Willoughby which looks great styled with either white lace up trainers or flat leopard print sandals for a stylish yet effortless summers day look.
Despite there being many leather and suede shoes, clothing and accessories. I was delighted to see a great selection of items that are Vegan that I could take home with me, so it was great to see that M&S are doing their bit to supply to the increasing number of ethical shoppers.

But if you can’t wait here’s a sneak peek at one of the items I picked up.
It’s a pretty floral waisted dobby dress from the M&S Collection range and is just £35!
