Radisson Blu Hotel Birmingham unveils stylish refurb


Hotel tour, cocktail masterclass, interactive dinner & three course meal

The Radisson Blu hotel in Birmingham is the tallest hotel in the city, its stylish blue glass exterior stands out among the city’s skyline. Back in my teen days my friends and I would stay in a cheap hotel not so far away from the Radisson whenever we were going to a gig at the o2 academy, I would always look up out of the window and see the Radisson and wish I was staying there instead. Fast forward almost a decade and I finally got my chance to check out one of the most stylish city centre hotels in Birmingham.

To celebrate the launch of Radisson Blu’s £3m refurbishment, I was invited along with a plus one for an exclusive tour of the newly decorated rooms, a cocktail masterclass, an interactive dinner and a three-course meal.

Revamped hotel rooms

The evening began with a warm welcome and a glass of prosecco before checking out the refurbishment. The hotel has 211 spacious and bright guest rooms with floor to ceiling views overlooking the UK’s second city. Each room has been given an ultra-sleek makeover, with crisp white bed sheets, soft grey carpets, cosy red seating and chrome fixtures & finishing’s.

Each room comes with fast complimentary WIFI, a 44” flat screen HD TV with Apple TV, an iron, ironing board, mini fridge, hairdryer, toiletries, a safe big enough to fit your laptop in and tea & coffee facilities. The beds have also been upgraded to ensure all guests have the best night’s sleep, in fact we were told that a customer loved the mattresses so much that they bought one for their own bed!

The bathroom has modern white square-tiles, a large mirror, shower/bath and perfect selfie lighting, which is just what you need when you’re getting ready for an evening out in Birmingham. The rooms looked very cosy and welcoming I especially liked the comfortable seating by the window, I could imagine myself sitting there with my laptop getting work done while watching the day go by.

Cocktail Masterclass

I wouldn’t have far to go to get food either, as the hotel has a luxurious Collage restaurant that has also been given a gorgeous makeover. The interior of the bar/restaurant has some quirky pieces of art that has incorporated iconic Birmingham landmarks.

During the tour we also checked out the conference rooms, that come with its very own sweet stand, I can imagine it’s a hit with those needing a sweet treat during tiring business meetings. Once the tour came to an end it was time to start making cocktails in the swanky Collage restaurant.

We started with a Williams aged sloe and mulberry gin, consisting of fresh raspberries, blueberries, lime juice and cranberry juice – this one was my favourite, I love berries! The next drink was something a little zestier, Chase marmalade vodka, featuring fresh lime juice, apricot conserve and sugar syrup.

Cooking masterclass


Holding tightly onto our fruity cocktails it was time to watch the head chef make fish cakes for our starters. The chef used smoked salmon & cod, dipped into egg and rolled into breadcrumbs and finished with a layer of buttered spinach, beurre blanc and homemade tartar. The fishcakes were mouth-watering, so golden and crisp sprinkled with sea salt.

As well as the fish cake, the team generously bought out multiple starters for us to try, from a selection of warm bread, fancy pork scratching's with dip and a cheese board accompanied with olives, bread sticks and ham. For my main I went for a pescatarian meal of traditional fish & chips – the crispy batter was lovely and the fish was cooked perfectly. My partner went for the vegetarian option - chickpea, lentil and kidney bean burger with chipotle mayo and fries – he really enjoyed getting his chops around this mighty burger!

No evening would be complete without ordering something off the dessert menu, I went for the super-rich flour free 70% chocolate cake with Crème fraîche (a must have for anyone on a gluten free diet – you will not be disappointed!). As a self-confessed chocolate addict, whose highly experienced in the dessert department I can confirm this cake makes it to the top of my list on the best cakes I’ve had this year, it was heavenly!

Sadly, the evening came to an end and we dragged our food & cocktail babies to the train station – luckily Grand Central is only a minutes’ walk away from the hotel.
