Many of us wear or cherish jewellery as a keepsake because each piece holds a special memory of a specific time in our lives. Whether we bought jewellery as a gift to ourselves to celebrate a personal milestone or received something sparkly as a gift from someone else to celebrate an occasion you shared with that significant other.
Every time we look at that diamond ring or pendant necklace it can rekindle a moment of joy that can be relived to make us feel special every time we wear it.
Although fashion trends come and go and styles of jewellery change, for generations we’ve always attached precious memories to jewellery helping us to bring our past memories or people we don’t want to forget with us into the present wherever we go.
I’m not a materialistic person, yet I’ll purchase jewellery as not only are they likely to hold a financial value in the future if looked after well but they have sentimental value in terms of the personal memories they hold and will hold for others if passed on to the family.

They say that the best gifts come in small packages, so if your looking to find the perfect gift for someone then jewellery is the way to go since gifts such as flowers and perfume won’t last forever, but a piece of fine jewellery and the significant memory it holds will.
A family jewellers that’s been manufacturing jewellery for over 50 years helping customers to find and custom make the perfect jewellery gift is Sonny’s an independent jewellery maker located in the heart of the historic Jewellery Quarter just a stone’s throw away from the hustle & bustle of Birmingham city centre.
The iconic JQ has a fascinating history of being an industrial town where various metals were used to craft items such as pens, small metal toys and pins. But since the 17th century, this West Midlands region is most known for its craftsmanship and trading of jewellery.
Many centuries later, the Jewellery Quarter still has the most businesses involved in the jewellery trade within Europe, contributing to 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK with most of these being small independent stores like Sonny’s Jewellery.

As some of you may know before I went full-time blogging, I owned a shop for six years customising vintage clothing and accessories. So, as an independent myself, I’m passionate about supporting local businesses, especially in the craft-making industry as I know how much time, expense and dedication it takes to create a unique item in the hope that it will be loved by the person it’s been custom-made for.
Sonny’s is a family-owned business with a large selection of 9ct, 18ct, 22pd gold and platinum jewellery. They sell certified diamonds, engagement rings, wedding bands, chains, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, earrings and dress rings suitable for all occasions, styles and budgets.
To find out more about these fine jewellery makers in Birmingham they kindly invited me to their store on 105 Vyse Street to admire their many cabinets of precious metals, gems and diamonds.
Aside from trying on gorgeous jewellery, what I enjoyed most was getting a rare glimpse behind the scenes in the workshop upstairs where they bring sketches to life with their bespoke jewellery service.

Despite having multiple staff in the shop who are happy to go above and beyond to find you the perfect gift. You’ll be surprised to find that they are not salespeople, so they are not driven by commission. Instead, everyone that works at Sonny’s has a degree or masters in related subjects such as jewellery design.
So they are extremely passionate about the industry meaning their interests are in pairing you with the perfect jewellery piece by asking you questions to help narrow down your search and if you don’t find it then they’ll work with you to design a bespoke item or make tweaks to an existing piece in store.
At Sonny’s the prices of jewellery vary between ££ - ££££ so there’s something for everyone’s budget and taste. But if you have your heart set on a piece of jewellery that’s out of your price range then Sonny’s can recreate it by changing the materials used.
For instance, they can use certified lab diamonds over real diamonds, it won’t affect the overall look but will reduce the price significantly to make it budget friendly.

In fact, the popularity of using synthetic diamonds is increasing since people are becoming more concerned about the environment and are looking for sustainable jewellery brands. But if real diamonds are your best friend then you can be reassured that the diamonds used at Sonny’s are traceable, so you know the journey of the item before you put a ring on it!
To have Sonny’s 5* rated customer experience the team asked me a few questions to get to know my personal style and preferences so that they could provide me with a selection of jewellery from the display that I’m most likely to love.
That’s when Sonny’s found me the perfect gift, a white gold ring with a small single diamond that matches my simplistic style of wanting something beautiful but not blingy and something that I can wear every day with it being in keeping with the rest of my clothing and accessory style.

For the ring to fit my sausage-like fingers Sonny’s made a quick alteration on the size upstairs in the workshop and that was it, I took the perfect gift home with me.
Knowing that the ring has been independently made with love by a passionate jewellery maker in a place that’s iconic and rich in history for the trade makes the ring feel that extra bit special to me and far more superior and unique than a piece of jewellery that has been mass-made in a factory.
So, if you are looking to find the perfect gift this Christmas Sonny’s Jewellery in the iconic Birmingham Jewellery Quarter is the place to go.
