1. Koocha Mezze Bar

The Koocha Mezze Bar does vegan cuisine with a twist. Serving up irresistible Persian-inspired dishes. The ingredients are fully plant-based, locally sourced and infused with sensational Middle-eastern flavours. Located in the heart of Bristol in St Andrews, this cocktail and mezze bar should be on your radar when searching for delicious and flavoursome vegan food.

The menu caters to all tastes, serving a range of colourful dishes. The reasonable prices make this place even more tempting, from £10 kebab creations to £4.75 shareable mezze plates including falafels, fritters and sabzi.

When I visited, I treated myself to the best-selling seitan based Doner kebab with all the flavourful trimmings in a Persian barbari bread, topped with drizzles of chilli and tzatziki sauce.

If you enjoy trying new flavours, Koocha Mezze Bar is the one for you. Plant-based or otherwise, everyone is sure to enjoy their creative dishes and love every bite.

2. Oowee Vegan

When craving dirty vegan junk food, head on over to Oowee Vegan, situated in the city centre. This award-winning plant-based eatery serves up comfort food. From burgers and fries to mac n' cheese and milkshakes, making it a perfect spot for a quick bite to eat.

The restaurant's fully vegan menu is fairly priced and utilises delicious plant-based alternatives to satisfy all of your junk food cravings. When I popped into the restaurant, I ordered the BBQ Cluckin sandwich burger made with ‘Crispy chick'n, BBQ sauce, American cheese, onion rings, gherkins, and lettuce’.

To go alongside this, my partner and I indulged in the double-dirty-fries ‘topped with cheese sauce, Oowee dirty sauce and crispy fried onions'. It was love at first sight and it tasted just as good as it looks.

Oowee Vegan's creations are sure to curb your hunger and they undoubtedly serve up some of the best vegan junk food in Bristol. I visited the Baldwin Street restaurant but there is also one on Picton Street.

Plus, there’s two in London and a delivery kitchen in Manchester.

3. Om Burger

Another eatery that masters the field of vegan junk food is Om Burger. Specialising in mouth-watering plant-based burgers. The eatery also offers fully vegan and vegetarian breakfasts and healthy drink creations to bring nutritious green cuisine to everyone who enters their doors.

When we visited Om Burger, I ordered the £9.95 ‘Yanky Doodle Moo’ and ‘Yay Satay’ burgers, which were complemented perfectly by the £8.75 Asian loaded fries. The meat-substitute burger patty had a great texture and was flavoursome accompanied by a delicious, pickled onion ring and tasty BBQ sauce.

The Yay Satay burger had a deliciously crispy ‘chicken’ patty dressed in satay sauce and pickled cucumbers, peanuts, and spring onions, making for a creative yet unforgettable dish which I'd recommend. The loaded fries were a great addition, too. Dressed with spice, salt, kimchi slaw, satay sauce alongside cauliflower, peanuts and chillies, the fries were truly sensational.

This reasonably priced restaurant is worth a visit – with plenty of options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s a must when you visit Bristol.

4. Café Kino

A favourite amongst vegans and locals who appreciate great coffee and brunch. Café Kino is a non-profit community café in the centre of Bristol serving up all things sweet and savoury. Perfect for a quick bite to eat any time of day. Their menu is entirely vegan and ethically focused, with burgers, breakfasts, cakes and deli-bites all up for grabs.

I'd recommend popping into the café not only for the hearty generous portions of food but also for the warm rustic interior. There's something for whatever you desire on the menu, with fairly priced kino burgers if you're craving comfort food, and a variety of delectable treats like vegan brownies, cookies or bakery pieces such as croissants and pain au chocolates. Perfect if you have a sweet tooth.

We bought two coffees, cookies, and brownies to takeaway which we later indulged in in bed at the hotel. Café Kino is an ideal spot to visit if you just fancy a quick bite to eat. This cute café is a hidden gem within Bristol's vegan foodie scene. Made better for being a not-for-profit co-op that hosts community events.

5. Burger Theory

A burger joint I loved and visited often in my hometown of Birmingham was Burger Theory until it sadly closed due to the pandemic. Fortunately, Bristol folk can still enjoy their amazing juicy dirty vegan burgers at their flagship restaurant on St Stephen’s Street. They can also be found at Lane7 if you fancy delicious plant-based grub with a game of ten-pin bowling.

I’ve often considered travelling to the city just to get my chops around their ‘Down n Dirty’ vegan burger with a side of skin-on fries as an excuse to spend the day in Bristol. The burger has a juicy “Miami ‘beef’ patty, perfectly melted American cheese, Down n Dirty burger sauce and pink pickled onions”.

Also, on the vegetarian burgers that can be made vegan menu is the ‘Southern Hippie’ featuring a fried portobello mushroom, halloumi, slaw, a blue cheese dressing and Bourbon BBQ sauce or Frank’s Hot Sauce. And their old school ‘cheese theory’ burger.

Burger Theory is not a dedicated vegan restaurant. However, the venue’s cool vibes, exciting menu and great plant-based offerings should certainly make them a place with vegan food to consider when discovering where to eat in Bristol.

They have a 2 for £14 happy hour, a selection of plant-based sides, fries, burgers, and drinks. And best of all if you fancy something sweet to wash down that dirty vegan patty then they also have dairy-free vegan shakes.
