Best family-friendly independent restaurants in Birmingham
As you may know, I’m always on the lookout for new places to eat in Birmingham, especially independent restaurants with great vegetarian and vegan options. Thankfully, the app Wriggle has just launched in Birmingham helping you to discover a variety of independent venues serving up unique food menus, coffees and cocktails in the city.
Not only does the Wriggle app help you to discover some of Birmingham’s best-hidden gems, but each day the venues listed in the app have a variety of special offers to be claimed just for Wriggle users.
So, you could purchase a main meal for £9.95 instead of £13 and pay for it within the app helping you to save money and collect reward points at the same time to redeem against more Wriggle orders. Plus, the app has a referral scheme so by sharing your Wriggle code they’ll receive £2 off their first Wriggle purchase and £2 will be credited to your Wiggle account too.
Wriggle, who carefully handpick independent food places in Birmingham by personally visiting and working with their favourites, kindly invited me to download the app and try out a bunch of food places I’ve never visited before.
So, to get going I used the search function to locate vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Birmingham and picked four places with great offers to indulge in! To only see food places that cater for your dietary requirements you can update the account settings so that you only see offers that are personalised to you!
1. BA-HA @ Churchill’s Bar - Mailbox

First on my radar was BA-HA based at Churchill’s Bar located at the Mailbox overlooking Birmingham’s iconic canal, near Canalside at The Cube. Before visiting I purchased the ‘Plant-based delight: Choice of Main’ offer for £9.95. With the offer, you can pick any main priced £13, so you make a saving of £3.05 by using Wriggle.
You also earn reward points with every single Wriggle booking that you make, and you can swap these rewards points for credit to spend at any Wriggle venue – a bit like a big, city-wide loyalty card.
BA-HA has a fully vegan menu, filled with plant-based starters, mains and desserts. Alongside our main, we were provided with complimentary chilled alkaline water, which is a lot healthier than tap water. To banish my hanger after a busy day in Birmingham I picked the ‘Bish & Chips’ made with a beer-battered bish blossom delicately marinated with the flavours of the sea alongside fresh hand-cut seasoned chips, mint mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce. This non-fishy dish is a fantastic alternative and is a lot more flavoursome than the real thing!
Eager to try out the famous BA-HA burger my partner upgraded to the ‘King Kentucky Burger’ and absolutely loved the insane crispy batter. Also, on the menu is the ‘Sweet Jack Burger’, ‘F&B Lasagna’, ‘Mushroom and Spinach Rigatoni’ and ‘Cauli-fornia Dreamin’. The rustic seasoned chips were delicious too.
There's no denying that BA-HA have one of the tastiest vegan burgers in Birmingham!

If you’re an experienced burger muncher like me then you need to check out Burger Theory located inside Kongs at Victoria Square. We purchased the Burger & fries offer for £7.95 (instead of £9.75!). They serve up twelve different meaty, veggie and vegan burgers so there’s something for everyone.
My partner got his chops around the ‘Rory’s Best Ever Veggie Cheese Burger’ stacked with a Tofu & quinoa patty, smoked cheddar, halloumi, house pickles, dijonnaise and house ketchup. He ate it in record time, so I know he loved it!
While I went for the ‘Dirty Hippie’ it comes with the same crispy tofu & quinoa patty but with juicy pink pickled onions and dirty vegan sauce and scrumptious skin-on fries. All vegetarian burgers can be made vegan and they also have Moving Mountains patties, so vegans won’t be disappointed.
Burger Theory are a foodie brand from Bristol, so if you visit the city and love independent veggie food, make sure to check out my vegan restaurants in Bristol post.
3. Hookways - The Minories

Hookways is a hidden gem in the city and can be found inside The Minories shopping centre serving up delicious fresh colourful salad boxes or made to order food from the gourmet kebabs, wraps, jacket potatoes and fries’ menu. Hookways is one of the many popular places for brunch in Birmingham with people from the offices nearby grabbing a convenient, healthy and affordable lunch to go from the self-serve gourmet salad bar.
Currently, Hookways has 3 offers to take advantage of on the Wriggle app, such as takeaway coffee for £1 (Americano & Espresso) or £2 (Flat white, Latte & Cappuccino) and any regular salad or chicken wrap with halloumi fries & drink for £5.95. Wriggle offers change regularly, so there’s lots of chances to experience all the delicious goodness Hookways has to offer. Therefore, it's a great spot to visit if you are seeking affordable independent coffee places in Birmingham.
My Birmingham food blogger friend opted for the chicken wrap and halloumi fries offer that’s usually £7.50. The halloumi fries were crisped to perfection and were sprinkled with juicy pomegranate seeds and sauce. While I went for the vegan gourmet falafel kebab served in a Kurdish flatbread with humous, Malouf cabbage, onions and tahini sauce. The falafel was gorgeous, so I’m not surprised that it took Hookways a year to perfect the recipe.
Hookways also serve-up desserts in Birmingham, they create incredible sweet treats such as crème egg and salted caramel brownies. So, you don’t want to miss them when they pop up on the Wriggle app! Although ever so naughty the salted caramel was a dream.

This best of Birmingham list wouldn’t be complete without including Birmingham’s number one venue for pizza. The independent @Pizza can be found in the heart of Bullring & Grand Central where you can design your own pizza with a choice of over 50 toppings and cooked from fresh in front of you in 90 seconds. @Pizza are serious about their dough so all sourdough pizzas are slow proofed for 48 hours.
My fully customised veggie pizza toppings of choice were peppers, jalapenos, sweetcorn, grilled red onions, mushrooms and vegan cheese drizzled with smoky BBQ sauce and sprinkled with chilli flakes. While my friend opted for a meaty alternative with pepperoni, kalamata olives and garlic mayonnaise.
@Pizza have a unique drink offering too with a variety of craft sodas such as mango & blood orange, peach & honey iced tea and ginger, lime & mint made with unrefined cane sugar. To sweeten things up further @Pizza also serve up dessert pizzas and sundaes. The sundae designed to give you all the tropical summer vibes is the ‘Tropococo’ made with coconut gelato, pineapple, desiccated coconut, mango coulis, mascarpone and crushed biscoff. Which got a sweet thumbs up from us!
Hand-stretched gluten-free & vegan sourdoughs are available too. I've also featured @Pizza in my food places to eat at in Birmingham this Spring post.
