Plant-based food restaurants in Birmingham

As an ever-evolving city and with the plant-based lifestyle on the rise, the vegan community in Birmingham is booming. Vegan dishes are more delicious than ever, allowing you to enjoy truly sumptuous foods created by plants, that provide wonderful flavours, textures, and nutrition. Birmingham has some of the best vegan food on offer – especially when it comes to burgers.

A favourite amongst meat-lovers and the meat-free, burgers are a staple at any major restaurant, and this means vegan substitutes are emerging too. From tofu, seitan and black bean, there are a million ways to enjoy a burger without the meat that's still bursting with flavour and protein.

Whether you're a full-time vegan foodie or just want to try something new for Veganuary, here are my favourite spots where you can find some of the best plant-based burgers in the city.

Among this list, you'll come across independent restaurants specifically catered to those of a vegan diet, but also chain restaurants within the city that have an extensive vegan menu while not being an exclusively vegan eatery.

1. BA-HA Vegan Kitchen, Churchills

Regarded by many as offering the best plant-based dishes in Birmingham, BA-HA can be found within the buzzing shopping and restaurant scene of The Mailbox in Birmingham city centre. Overlooking unbeatable canal views and an inviting atmosphere, its incredible selection of exquisite vegan and vegetarian food alike renders it an unbeatable spot for a bite to eat.

Using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients, BA-HA Vegan Kitchen offers something to curb your craving whether it's a veggie lunch bite or a plant-based Sunday roast. Amongst the intriguingly named appetising dishes, such as the £12.95 "Bish and Chips", lies the "Royal King Kentucky Burger" – a BA-HA special.

Coming in at £14.95, you can tuck into 2 crispy oyster mushroom patty's, drizzled in vegan garlic mayo and perfectly presented in a vegan brioche bun alongside homemade chips. There's no wonder it's a favourite amongst locals of the BA-HA Vegan Kitchen, as you can enjoy the delectable taste of a classic burger dish while remaining plant-based and full of essential proteins!

Serving signature dishes and one of the best vegan burgers in town, the BA-HA Vegan Kitchen raises the standard of vegan food for all competing eateries. Receiving raving reviews from both vegans and meat-eaters, it's certainly not one to be missed.

2. The Warehouse Café, Digbeth

Situated just a short walk from the city centre and nearby the iconic Custard Factory, Digbeth is a stylish, vibrant gem in Birmingham, home to some of the trendiest eateries and entertainment venues within the city. This distinctive independent café is found within The Warehouse environmental community building, offering flavoursome dishes using only plant-based ingredients in a comforting eco-friendly environment.

Dining on a vegan diet doesn't mean you have to be limited with your choice of food, and with The Warehouse Café's extensive menu bursting with beguiling plant-based dishes at reasonable prices, you'll be spoilt for choice.

Three varieties of vegan burgers are on offer, with the cheapest being £9, and are all equally sensational. The "OG Burger" serves up the classic barbecue favourite vegan, which can be upgraded to the "Cheese Burger" with irresistible melting vegan cheese and tempting caramelised onion chutney on top for £10.95. Craving something more? Why not go all out and try the £11.50 "Dirty Kebab Burger" – a vegan burger patty deliciously stacked with seitan, sauerkraut and a sweet apple and plum chutney.

While the vegan burgers on offer are a must-have from this unique café, something a little different might take your fancy, such as the Seitan Doner Kebab. With the pressing desire for plant-based alternatives to classic dishes with veganism on the rise, this dish performs perfectly. Using the popular meat alternative seitan, expertly seasoned, the kebab is presented in a wholemeal pitta kebab that's comparable to the real thing and tastes just as good – if not better.

When seeking flavourful dishes catered to your plant-based diet at unbeatable prices, why not head into Digbeth and support The Warehouse Café for an unforgettable dining experience.

Café Rouge is the home to delicious French-inspired cuisine in the heart of Birmingham's Bullring, where classic dishes are served with a contemporary twist within its truly Parisian interior. Treat yourself to afternoon tea in Birmingham with friends where you can indulge in several classic French dishes from savouries to sweets, or visit for a three-course meal at Café Rouge with the family for an unforgettable and authentically Parisian dining experience.

This distinctive French bistro doesn't hesitate to cater to vegans with a variety of plant-based dishes on offer sure to take your fancy. Alongside the tempting wild mushroom risotto, Café Rouge offers up two plant-based burgers – the beloved Beyond Meat vegan burger and a spicy chickpea burger.

The Beyond meat burger continues to reign supreme as a popular meat-free alternative, topped off with a fresh salad and classically presented in a floured bun – when ordering this, you can't go wrong. Fancy trying something different? The spicy chickpea burger proves a strong contender against the Beyond burger, using a combination of chickpeas, pepper and sweetcorn to create a delectable plant-based burger patty, seasoned to perfection.

Although a chain restaurant that isn't entirely vegan, Café Rouge does an incredible job at making sure every customer who sits down in their retro Parisian eatery is catered for, with moreish dishes that remain French-inspired at their core.

All Bar One simply oozes style with its rustic décor and contemporary lighting features that create an inviting and comforting atmosphere as soon as you enter. And with the food, this style is certainly exemplified. Amongst enticing dishes such as vegan nachos and jackfruit wrap, the Beyond Meat burger is available to be purchased for £13.95. Loved by many vegans as a meat-free alternative that replicates the real thing in an ultimately irresistible plant-based way, the Beyond Burger proves to be a hit every time and should be a strong contender for vegans when visiting All Bar One.

Perfect for a night out with friends, you can relish in the buzzing atmosphere of the bar and the knowledge that you'll be treated to dishes bursting with flavour while sticking to your plant-based diet. It’s one of my favourite places to eat vegan food in Birmingham.

Situated in the 4-star establishment of the Penta Hotel, their ‘Pentalounge’ restaurant shouldn't be overlooked as a choice for a bite to eat, whether you're staying at the luxury accommodation in Birmingham as a guest or simply in the city for the day.

Found amongst a list of tempting dishes, the B12 Vegetarian burger comes in at £14.50 and is not only bursting with flavour but bursting with nutrients also. Chefs at the Penta Hotel use an expertly crafted 100% plant-based burger patty infused with mushroom, beetroot, oats, herbs, and soya protein to create a burger dish that will certainly not disappoint.

The B12 Vegetarian burger comes with all the taste and enjoyment you can get with a classic burger dish, while being ultimately safe for those with a veggie lifestyle, with kinder ingredients that are packed with protein.

While it may not be an obvious choice, the Penta Hotel's restaurant is a fierce contender for that perfect plant-based burger. Although its menu could do with more options for vegans and vegetarians, this burger is sure to satisfy any craving and shouldn't be overlooked on this list.

With over 30 locations across the UK, Gourmet Burger Kitchen specialises in classic burger dishes, and although it isn't specifically catered to vegans or vegetarians, its menu doesn't exclude those of us leading a plant-based lifestyle. This canal-side eatery allows you to enjoy incredible views alongside incredible food, served with a smile and at affordable prices.

Three entirely vegan burgers are on offer when dining at GBK that remain completely gourmet as the restaurant claims. Crafted with flavour in mind and using wholesome, healthy meat-free alternatives, choose from the classic vegan burger at £7.60, the Californian at £9.45, and the Beyond Meat burger and cheese at £12.29.

Both the base-level vegan burger and the Californian utilise a delicious, pan-fried bean patty, with extra mouth-watering additions of melting vegan cheese, creamy avocado, and delicately seasoned onions. If you're going to GBK with a larger appetite, the Beyond Burger is a well-loved meat-free dish that proves a favourite amongst vegans.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen is a prime example of the numerous options popping up all across Birmingham for vegans and vegetarians to enjoy a delicious meal. Dine-in with the family where there's something for everyone, no matter your dietary requirements, at this beloved restaurant chain.
