Cafe Rouge - Secret Steak Supper Club - Autumn Menu
Cafe Rouge have a new Autumn Menu and I was invited to try it out during an evening of endless bottles of wine, plenty of food and great company
The popular French Bistro, Cafe Rouge invited me and a plus one to their secret steak supper club to try out the new Autumn menu at their Mailbox restaurant in Birmingham. Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome from the Cafe Rouge staff and a lovely glass of Pigalle Brut champagne from their local suppliers, The Champaign Company. While the Cafe Rouge team explained all about the new Autumn menu, we got to sample a selection of mini starters, my favourite was the Croquettes de Legumes - petits pois, broad bean and herb croquettes with creme fraiche aioli.
After sampling the mini starters, we were seated to our tables and I got to sit by the very friendly BellaAndRobot, who had also brought her mother as a plus one, so it was such a lovely evening chatting and dining with endless bottles of fizz, red wine and food.
The Cafe Rouge guys made sure our drinks were fully topped up before we got to pick a full size starter. I went for the Crevettes - king prawns in garlic & smoked chilli butter with a baguette. This was great I loved dipping the bread into the butter as it was full of flavour and the prawns were cooked perfectly. As much as I enjoyed this starter, I really would have liked to have tried the full size starter in the Croquettes de Legumes too. I'm a nightmare in restaurants, I am so indecisive when ordering as I just want to try everything. My mother had the Salmon Rillettes - a rustic pate of smoked and cured salmon, lightly flavoured with shallot and chives, served with watercress, caper berries and a rye & caraway wedge. She said the salmon pate complimented the pot of shallot and chives and was lovely dipping the bread into, however was disappointing as she would have liked it to be a hot starter and wasn't expecting it to be a cold dish.
Next up we got to sample the selection of steaks, from a 5oz minute rump, 7oz fillet, 80z sirloin and 12oz rib-eye. All of the steaks come from the premium Charolais breed and are British fed on a natural diet by trusted farmers. I never tried the steak as I don't eat red meat, but my mom absolutely loved the selection of steak dipped into its accompanying sauce. She enjoyed the Rib eye steak so much that she couldn't help but ring her partner straight away to tell him his got to come and try it out for his birthday at the weekend. She describes the steak as mouth-watering, as it literally just melted in her mouth. With the steak we got to sample a selection of wines from
The Champagne Company who are local suppliers, I'm not a huge fan of red wine, because I am more into the fizz and cocktails, but everyone seemed to be really enjoying the selection.
So now it was time to eat the main meal from the new Autumn Edition menu. I picked the Tarte - warm beetroot and goats cheese in shortcrust pastry with house salad, which was one of the few vegetarian options. This was really delicious and the beetroot and goats cheese complimented each other well, I especially enjoyed the crust and the crumbs on top. As I have a small appetite and had already ate so much food that evening, I struggled to finish the tart as it was so filling and rich. I should have asked for a doggy bag, so I could have it for my lunch the following day. My mother had the Poulet Breton - roast chicken supreme with mushrooms, courgettes, leeks and herb wine sauce with mash. She says this was delicious, the chicken was succulent, and the wine sauce with garlic mash was gorgeous.
The evening ended with a selection of desserts to share, we got to try the Rum Baba - light sponge cake soaked in a rum sauce with creme fraiche; Tarte Aux Pommes - warm apple tart and my favourite of them all the Tarte Au Citron - lemon tart and creme fraiche. The Rum Baba was too 'rummy' for my liking, I never sampled the apple tart but the lemon tart was delicious, so creamy and zesty, I would have certainty enjoyed a large portion of this.
Me and my mom had such a lovely evening and we all got totally spoilt with food, drink and a great service by Cafe Rouge, it was also lovely to chat with BellaAndRobot so go check her out. As I didn't want to make this post too photo heavy, you can find more photos and videos showing the food, and overall experience from this evening on my Facebook page.
