As a Birmingham resident, I have discovered several gems, and I will share my top picks with you in this post. These romantic eateries range from cosy candlelit corners to awe-inspiring rooftop views, offering delicious meals and an atmosphere that exudes a touch of magic.

So, get ready to impress your partner and raise your dining experience to the next level at one of these must-visit Birmingham spots.

1. Café Rouge

The famed French Bistro Cafe Rouge in Birmingham invited me and a guest to its secret steak supper club to sample its new Autumn menu at its restaurant near the Mailbox. Upon arrival, the Cafe Rouge staff greeted us warmly and offered a glass of Pigalle Brut champagne from its local supplier, The Champaign Company.

We sampled a mini starter while the Cafe Rouge team explained the new menu. My favourite was the Croquettes de Legumes, petits pois, broad bean, and herb croquettes with creme fraiche aioli. We were then seated at our tables, and I had the chance to sit next to fellow Birmingham bloggers to enjoy the evening.

We were served endless bottles of fizz, red wine, and food. The Cafe Rouge staff made sure our drinks were fully topped up before picking a full-size starter. I had the Crevettes, king prawns in garlic and smoked chilli butter with a baguette. It was delicious, and I loved dipping the bread into the butter, as it was full of flavour, and the prawns were cooked perfectly. However, I also wanted to try the full-size starter of Croquettes de Legumes, so I’ll order that on my next visit.

My plus one had the Salmon Rillettes, a rustic pate of smoked and cured salmon lightly flavoured with shallot and chives, served with watercress, caper berries, and a rye and caraway wedge. She said the salmon pate complemented the pot of shallot and chives and was lovely to dip the bread into. However, she was disappointed that it was a cold dish and would have preferred it to be served warm.

Next, my mother got to sample the selection of steaks, including a 5-oz minute rump, 7-oz fillet, 80-oz sirloin, and 12-oz rib-eye. All the steaks come from the premium Charolais breed and are British-fed on a natural diet by ‘trusted farmers’. I didn't try the steak as I don't eat red meat, but my mom loved the selection of steak dipped into its accompanying sauce. She particularly enjoyed the Ribeye steak, which she described as mouth-watering as it melted in her mouth.

I chose the tarte, warm beetroot, and goat cheese in shortcrust pastry with a house salad as the primary meal from the new seasonal menu. The beetroot and goat's cheese complemented each other well, and I especially enjoyed the crust and the crumbs on top. However, I had a small appetite and had already eaten so much food that evening, so I struggled to finish the tart as it was so filling and rich. I should have asked for a doggy bag for my lunch the following day.

My mother had the Poulet Breton, roast chicken supreme with mushrooms, courgettes, leeks, and herb wine sauce with mash. She says this was delicious. The chicken was succulent, and the wine sauce with garlic mash was gorgeous.

The evening ended with a selection of desserts to share, including the Rum Baba, a light sponge cake soaked in a rum sauce with creme fraiche, Tarte Aux Pommes, warm apple tart, and my favourite of them all, the Tarte Au Citron, lemon tart and creme fraiche. The Rum Baba was too 'rummy' for my liking, and although I didn't try the apple tart, the lemon tart was so creamy and zesty.

Overall, my mother and I had a lovely evening. Cafe Rouge treated us to great food and drink and excellent service. While dining here, you’re sure to feel like you're experiencing a romantic trip to Paris for a moment.

2. Browns

Browns is a charming British brasserie and bar in Birmingham. It provides couples a romantic dining experience in a sophisticated yet warm atmosphere. The café boasts picturesque outdoor terraces that offer lovely views of St Martin's Square, accompanied by live music. During my recent visit with my partner, we were attracted by the relaxed ambience of the place.

The menu at Browns caters to a diverse range of tastes, offering indulgent options such as Lobster Nights and an indulgent Afternoon Tea. We went for the popular two-course Lunch Menu, which was very satisfying and affordable at £17.95. Dishes such as the Smoked Scottish Salmon and the hearty Chicken and Leek Pie are included in the menu. We were tempted to add a third course for a mere £21.95, as the desserts offered were irresistible.

Browns is one of Birmingham's most romantic restaurants, promising a memorable and intimate experience. Whether you indulge in afternoon tea or a sumptuous evening meal, Browns offers exquisite dishes and an intimate atmosphere that displays romance.

It’s one of my favourite places to enjoy alfresco dining in Birmingham, so I always return, especially during the summer. My vegetarian food in Birmingham post includes a few examples of the food I’ve eaten here.

When you step into Tattu in Birmingham, you'll feel like you're entering a world that perfectly balances ancient philosophy with modern Chinese cuisine and artistic interior design. The restaurant is located in the basement of the Grand Hotel and offers an experience that engages all of your senses. I heard about Tattu after attending the opening launch night and was instantly intrigued by the unique ambience and innovative menu.

The restaurant's dual-level design is a nod to the old Chinese idea of Yin and Yang, where two opposing forces are balanced and harmonious. The ground floor represents Yang and features traditional wooden fretwork and warm, fiery lighting. Meanwhile, the downstairs embodies Yin, with its delicate and feminine essence created by a fascinating canopy of cherry blossoms casting delicate shadows on the granite walls.

Each dish is beautifully presented and fuses traditional flavours with modern techniques. The sharing plates, in particular, will highlight your evening, adding to the intimate and impressive experience.

For anyone who wants to experience contemporary Chinese cuisine in Birmingham in a setting that tells a story of harmony and beauty, Tattu is the perfect destination. Among the romantic restaurants, it stands out for its unique and attractive ambience and menu.
