Afternoon tea in West Midlands

If you’re not seeking brunch places in Birmingham, then the next best thing to crave in the city is high tea!

There’s just something about afternoon tea that I adore. From the scrumptious finger sandwiches, tempting sweet treats and indulgent creamy scones stuffed with as much cream and strawberry jam that I can fit on without making too much mess.

Birmingham and the surrounding area have some lovely restaurants to visit to enjoy a spot of afternoon tea with friends and family whether it's for a special occasion or you simply just want to feast on three tiers of delicious food with a glass of fizz and unlimited cups of tea and coffee in Birmingham.

You are bound to find the perfect place from my list of personal recommendations.

1. Cucina Rustica - Jewellery Quarter

Recently to celebrate my Birthday, we had the pleasure to experience Afternoon Tea at the authentic Cucina Rustica an independent Italian restaurant in Birmingham located in St Paul's Square within the Jewellery Quarter.

We enjoyed a variety of plant-based sandwiches such as avocado & tomato, vegan cheese & cucumber, beetroot and Mediterranean veggies along with a great selection of colourful cakes decorated with flowers and of course scrumptious scones with coconut cream and jam.

Whether you are celebrating or not, it was lovely to experience Cucina Rustica with a glass of fizz, delicious food and with true Italian music and service. Afternoon Tea is £19.50pp or £23.50pp with Prosecco. If you require a Vegan afternoon tea it must be booked in advance.

2. Laura Ashley - Solihull

Laura Ashley The Tea Room located within The Regency Hotel in Solihull is a gorgeous venue. I’ve visited many times with family for special occasions like celebrating Graduation and a Mother's Day gift experience.

Besides from the calming atmosphere and elegant setting I love that everyone individually is served a pot of tea with a variety of healthy loose-leaf teas to choose from with my favourite being the Red Berry & Hibiscus Flower tea.

When booked in advance the tearoom can accommodate for dietary requirements. They have a beautiful selection of sandwiches and cakes suitable for vegans such as Hummus and roasted vegetable sandwiches and coffee and date cake. Traditional afternoon tea is £22.50pp or £28.50pp with a glass of Prosecco.

3. Browns - Bullring

Browns Brasserie at the Bullring is an upscale restaurant I’ve visited many times. I’m always thoroughly impressed with their food and service and it’s a lovely venue to escape to for a couple of hours. Browns high tea consists of home-baked scones, seasonal savoury snacks and delectable sweet treats, Fairtrade teas and optional Champagne or G&T’s.

The dietary requirements for Afternoon Tea is limited despite having a great main menu for GF and vegans so make sure to ask before booking. However, they do have the option to enjoy afternoon tea for one (£18.50) or two (£37.00) and it is served daily from 3pm until 4.30pm.

4. Hyatt Regency Hotel - Bridge Street

One of my most memorable afternoon tea experiences was in the secret garden of the Aria restaurant at Hyatt Regency hotel in Birmingham. The soothing sound of the water fountain and tranquil music being played while surrounded by plants makes it a peaceful oasis to visit to get away from the hustle and bustle of Birmingham city centre.

They have a traditional afternoon tea for £25pp or a champagne high tea for £34pp and is available Monday – Friday from 12pm to 5pm and weekends from 1pm till 5pm. A vegetarian option is also available, and they have restaurant, spa and hotel stay packages too.

For more about my experience read my afternoon tea, spa day and overnight stay at Hyatt Regency Birmingham post.

5. Mercure Hotel - Birmingham West

I’ve experienced afternoon tea at both Mercure Birmingham West Hotel and Mercure Telford Hotel. A lot of the local Mercure hotels have been recently refurbished with interiors featuring artwork themed around the industrial heritage of the local area which I found enjoyable to see.

The afternoon tea is served on elegant floral plates and teas are poured from adorable teapots. Prices and booking options vary from hotel but experiences such as a spa day with treatment and afternoon tea for two is available at a variety of Mercure Hotels across the West Midlands.

6. Harvey Nichols - Birmingham

Pinkies at the ready, Harvey Nichols at the Mailbox Birmingham have afternoon tea available for £22pp or with a cocktail for £32pp served Monday to Saturday 1pm – 4pm and on Sunday’s between 3pm – 5pm.

The last time I experienced a Harvey Nichols High Tea was when they exclusively collaborated with Edinburgh Gin to create a gin inspired afternoon tea. So, they occasionally introduce an exciting themed menu, which is worth looking out for.

However, their most recent vegan afternoon tea features falafel balls, wild mushrooms on toast and roasted tofu with cranberry and sage stuffing meaning I need to pay another visit asap, it sounds delicious!

If you fancy a day of pampering and afternoon tea, you'll find Harvey Nichols is home to one of the top-rated beauty clinics in Birmingham where you can experience treatments such as advanced Environ skincare facials.

7. Marco Pierre White - The Cube

High tea can be enjoyed with a panoramic view of Birmingham on the 25th floor of The Cube building at Marco Pierre White's Steakhouse.

Champagne Afternoon Tea for Two at MPW is approximately £60 or less and is available daily between 12pm - 5pm. Or an Italian Sparkling Afternoon Tea for two can be experienced at Marco’s Bardolino restaurant in The Cube for around £29 - £50.

Please note that it costs extra to get a table next to the window. But you are sure to have a lovely time, like my mother and I did so it’s the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion.

To find out more read my afternoon tea at Marco Pierre White Birmingham post. If you fancy making a night of it then you could always stroll along the hallway for an overnight stay at The Cube Hotel.

8. The Belfry - Sutton Coldfield

The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield that’s well known for its iconic golf course is another luxurious venue where you can enjoy it’s popular The Belfry Spa Day with Afternoon Tea package.

But if fancy visiting simply to indulge in their Champagne Afternoon Tea for Two than it’s served daily between 12pm-4pm in The Belfry’s Brabazon Bar and comes with traditional tea breads, delicate pastries and a selection of herbal teas or coffee and is all served in elegant Bone China.

Since visiting they’ve added a variety of colourful sweet treats to the cake selection, so the afternoon tea looks even more scrumptious now.
