Best Hotels in Telford
The Mercure Telford Centre Hotel sits in the heart of the charming historic region of Telford within the West Midlands and is a delightful 4-star accommodation I had the pleasure of staying at during a press event they hosted in 2019 to celebrate the new refurbishment.
While staying here, you can discover the sights of Telford, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The hotel’s location cannot be faulted – situated nearby the town centre and near the top local attractions, including the Ironbridge Gorge Museum and the Blists Hill Victorian Museum.
If you enjoy history there’s so much to get up to as soon as you step out of your hotel room. Conveniently located just off the M54, a short walk from the Telford International Centre, and a 7-minute walk from the train station. This hotel couldn’t be more perfect for those visiting the picturesque town for business, too.
This modernised hotel has a contemporary design that welcomes guests and promises to give you a comforting stay. With spacious surroundings and stylish furnishings, the accommodation allows guests to feel relaxed and treat their room like a home-from-home.
Have a read to discover everything this hotel has to offer and see what your stay could be like if you plan a visit to the quaint town of Telford.

The eclectic history of Telford has been utilised as design inspiration throughout the hotel, with interesting design pieces scattered throughout the inviting lobby. Catching your eye as soon as you step inside, you’ll notice unique furnishings honouring the nearby Ironbridge – considered one of Telford’s most iconic attractions – together with trendy contemporary designs to remain modern.
The lobby is perfect for the array of guests who visit the hotel, with spaces to relax throughout alongside plenty of conference rooms, making the accommodation a perfect choice for tourists and business visitors alike.
If you are a local, visiting from elsewhere in the UK or are here from travelling abroad I’m sure you’ll appreciate the unique interiors honouring the local heritage that gave this part of the West Midlands the name Black Country due to its heavily polluted landscape during the industrial revolution.
There are many other lovely towns to visit nearby if you’re staying for a couple of days and are looking for things to do, especially if you enjoy strolling around new places and admiring the old architecture as I do. If this sounds like something you’d like to do, then you may want to check out the many Historic Towns and Places to Visit in the West Midlands.
The onsite leisure facilities

There’s certainly no shortage of leisure facilities throughout the hotel to keep you occupied throughout your stay.
After enjoying a stroll around the town and taking in the historic attractions, take a short walk back to the hotel and have a dip in the heated indoor pool, before taking a minute to relax in the sauna and steam room.
Or, if fitness is more your thing, there’s a fully equipped gym located in the hotel. Whatever way you desire to relax or spend your free time while on a visit to Telford, this hotel makes sure you won’t be out of ideas.
If instead, you want to get outdoors and enjoy walking then you may be interested in visiting The Wrekin located just 8 – 13 minutes by car from the hotel. The Wrekin is a Mountain peak in the beautiful Shropshire hills and is one of the top-rated places for summit hike views in the West Midlands.

If the weather isn’t shining and you’d rather stay warm and cosy indoors I recommend indulging in finger sandwiches and bottomless tea finished off with sweet treats for a relaxing hour or two.
Although not actively advertised the Mercure Telford Centre Hotel do host Afternoon Tea. So, you can travel down from your homely hotel room to the local heritage-themed tearoom on the ground floor and enjoy a three-tier display of treats among the retro designs that reflect the historic charm of the town.
Whether you’re staying at the hotel alone for business or with family, you shouldn’t pass up on the chance to enjoy this classic English indulgence. Feel like royalty as you tuck into the assortment of delicious, sweet treats - with classic cakes, scones, and sandwiches, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Plus, sip on tea from eye-catching vintage teacups that emphasise the charm of this quintessentially British tradition. To ensure you have a delicious experience, be sure to let them know of your dietary requirements in advance.
An event at the function room

There are plenty of event spaces throughout the hotel to be used for whatever purpose you have – whether you’re visiting on business and need to use a space for a conference meeting, or planning a party or wedding, the hotel proves perfect.
I got the chance to explore the versatility of the hotel myself on my visit. After relaxing in my hotel room, I strolled down to the lobby and was directed to an event space at the back of the hotel where my guest and I enjoyed a delectable buffet while celebrating the hotel’s new refurbishment with other members of the local press.
We tucked into an assortment of flavoursome dishes while listening to live music performed by a local band, allowing me to enjoy a wonderful evening before effortlessly strolling back to my hotel room.
To end the eventful day Mercure planned for us, we finished it with a movie in bed while my guest indulged in candy floss and Pick n Mix from the fun sweet stall they had at the event.

During my overnight stay, I enjoyed a cosy standard room. Featuring minimal yet sleek furnishings, the room was fresh and modern, yet still incorporated inspiration from the attractions in Telford, with odes to the Ironbridge visible on the walls and carpet.
The comfortable double bed couldn’t have been more inviting, with clean crisp white sheets and a firm and soft pillow providing a great night’s sleep. The standard room also features a handy desk and seating space, so guests can do work in the comfort of their room or simply clutter it with hair accessories and makeup like my guest and I did ahead of getting ready that evening for the event downstairs.
The sleekness of the room continues with the bathroom. Complete with modern white tiling, a large light-up LED mirror and a shower over a bathtub. This is great for having the option to have a relaxing soak after a business or leisure trip in Telford or a quick shower before heading out for the day.
You’ll find that the water pressure is pretty good and there are complimentary toiletries provided, such as a shower cap, shower gel, a bar of soap and shampoo in case you haven’t got your own. Mercure has started using a shower gel dispenser that is fixed to the wall which is great to see as I do always dislike seeing travel-size single-use plastic toiletries in hotels.
Continental buffet breakfast

After enjoying a great night’s sleep in my homely hotel room, I took a short walk to the restaurant near the lobby and enjoyed a continental buffet breakfast.
With an extensive range of foods to dine in on, there’s something for everyone, no matter your dietary requirements. If you’re vegan like me that shouldn’t be a problem, just ask staff if there are plant-based sausages or scrambled tofu for you to have if you prefer a hot breakfast. I’m sure they’ll have something suitable, especially if you let them know in advance of allergies etc.
I enjoyed a refreshing glass of orange juice, alongside some hash browns, baked beans, tomatoes, and mushrooms alongside some fresh fruit before reluctantly checking out.

To conclude
There we have it – a rundown of the great facilities and amenities I enjoyed while being a guest at Mercure Hotels. When considering a trip to the charming historic town of Telford, look no further than the Mercure Telford Centre Hotel.
I’ve also had a similar experience to this stay at the nearby Mercure Birmingham West Hotel too, which is closer to Birmingham City Centre and the international train station. Both Telford and the Birmingham West hotel are perfect for business trips. The Telford hotel does have a lot more car parking spaces too.
