How to reduce congested skin with facial toners

On the hunt for smooth, glowy skin? Look no further than this list, rounding up some of the best liquid exfoliants on the market that will give you the skin of your dreams.

Liquid exfoliants are used to treat dead skin cells on the face, with carefully crafted formulations helping to generate new cells and dissolve the dead skin tissue. The exfoliants are particularly helpful if you suffer from acne or are prone to breakouts, or if you’re just keen to ensure your skin is as healthy and even as possible.

Ranging from budget-friendly exfoliators to high-end ones, there are so many skincare products on the cosmetic market to choose from, making it even harder to realise what will benefit your skin the most. So, if you find yourself scratching your head as you scan the shelves for the best product to try, you’ve come to the right place.

Are liquid exfoliants good?

With an ever-expanding skincare market, it can be hard to know what products will work the best with your skin and make the most difference. In answer to the question – are liquid exfoliants good for you? – the answer is yes.

Perhaps the best way to unclog pores and regenerate the skin is by using liquid exfoliants – the exfoliating properties will help even out skin texture and ensure your face remains as radiant as possible.

Despite the incredible benefits of these beauty products, it’s important to note that you don’t overuse them. If you have sensitive skin, make sure you only use exfoliators up to three times a week to not irritate the face.

What is the most effective exfoliator for the face?

The most effective exfoliator is a facial toner or chemical peel containing either Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). The list below features some of the best liquid exfoliants to add to your skincare regime.

An AHA exfoliant usually contains water-soluble acids made from sugary fruits such as Glycolic, Lactic, Malic, Tartaric and Mandelic. Whereas the oil-soluble BHAs contain Salicylic acid and depending on the formula of the product Citric acid can be considered both AHA and BHA.

What is the difference between AHAs and BHAs?

The active ingredients within liquid exfoliators are what make the products so beneficial to the skin, however, you should make sure you know the ingredients that you’re using on your skin.

Both AHA’s (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHA’s (beta-hydroxy acids) are crucial ingredients within exfoliators. But which one is best? And how do I know which one is best for my skin? Although both AHA’s and BHA’s work wonders for the skin, there are key differences.

AHA’s are water-soluble and are particularly beneficial to those with dryer skin due to their hydrating properties, by exfoliating the top layer of skin. Contrastingly, BHA’s are oil-soluble and go deep into the skin, therefore are particularly helpful to those who have acne-prone skin.

Despite their differences, the two often overlap and – if you are careful and don’t have overly-sensitive skin – can even be used together. Ultimately, though, it’s important to do your research and realise what type of exfoliant will work best for your skin goals, with neither ingredient being better than the other.

What are the benefits of Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)?

AHA’s, due to their hydrating properties, will be best suited to those with dry and skin-damaged skin, with these moisturising factors helping to reduce the signs of sun damage and wrinkles as collagen production is stimulated.

As a result of these hydrating and anti-inflammatory qualities, AHA’s are incredibly useful in giving you the radiant and youthful skin of your dreams, by increasing blood flow and ensuring your complexion is as smooth as possible.

What are the benefits of beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs)?

BHA’s penetrate through layers of skin to increase cell turnover and lift dead skin cells to unclog pores and reveal the smooth skin underneath. Most commonly, salicylic acid is found within BHA exfoliants, meaning they are perfect for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Thanks to the antibacterial and soothing properties of BHA’s, those with sensitive skin can use these exfoliants and reap the full benefits, with skin-calming and gentle properties.

How often should you exfoliate your face?

As stated, it’s so important to know your skin and your skin type. Although exfoliators are designed to be kind to the skin, over-use can lead to irritation and reverse the benefits.

Dermatologists and skin experts recommend that you should only exfoliate up to three times a week, or even once or twice a week if your skin is particularly sensitive or prone to irritation. If you use exfoliants too much, you may risk stripping your skin of its natural, essential oils.

Physical Scrub or Chemical Exfoliation - Which Is Better?

According to many skincare dermatologists, physical exfoliation is bad for your skin. A scrub that contains grainy rough particles such as apricot scrubs can create micro-tears on the surface. So is damaging to the appearance and health of the skin and in some cases can cause infection, irritation, and inflammation.

Whereas no harsh scrubbing or particles are used in chemical exfoliants, and the formula is evenly distributed across the face working on the surface and penetrating the pores to safely decongest blackheads by reducing a build-up of sebum and removing dead flaky skin cells. While also benefiting the skin with anti-ageing vitamin A and collagen-enhancing vitamin C for glowing smoother skin.

Nutshells and fruit pits are often used in physical scrubs, and so have microbeads that have recently been banned in many countries for being harmful to marine life. Sugar scrubs are the safest option if you prefer a physical exfoliation, however, if you have sensitive and thin facial skin like me, it may not be ideal.

So, it’s best to add sugar scrubs to your body care regime instead as the skin is thicker and can handle this body exfoliation process a lot better than the delicate skin on your face.

Best Liquid Facial Exfoliators

Now that you know how liquid exfoliators and facial peels work, the benefits of chemical exfoliants like AHA, BHA and Glycolic acids and why you should consider using exfoliating toners instead of physical face scrubs.

Here are 9 of the best liquid toners I’ve used over the past few years to exfoliate the skin and remove dry flaky patches to reveal a smoother skin texture. Perfect for creating a smooth base ahead of applying makeup.

1. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

Sian Victoria © - The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

It’s likely not a shock to see a product by The Ordinary on this list. This popular skincare brand is a fan-favourite in the cosmetic field and is known for giving you sensational results while making sure to not break the bank.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution is a lightweight, easy-to-use toner that appeals to a wide variety of skin types. Designed to target a host of skin concerns, including acne-prone skin, those suffering from dull, textured skin and improving signs of ageing, the solution works miracles.

This cruelty-free and vegan toner works deep within the skin to regenerate and promote a radiant complexion, with glycolic acid – a popular AHA – working hard to break down dead skin cells to even out skin texture and encourage collagen production to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Alongside glycolic acid as a key ingredient, the toner also boasts Tasmanian Pepperberry extract to soothe inflammation and reduce irritation.

This product by The Ordinary is a staple in many people’s skincare routine, giving users an array of benefits for just £8 – for something so affordable, you won’t believe how great the results are. And, due to its careful formulation, even those with sensitive skin will be able to use and enjoy this effective product.

If you’re new to this brand, then you may find my acne and anti-ageing skincare by The Ordinary post helpful to discover new products that may be perfect to treat your skin concerns.

2. Pixi Glow Tonic

Sian Victoria © - Pixi Glow Tonic

The Pixi Glow Tonic is another popular choice among skin-care enthusiasts.

Although this product costs slightly more than the budget-friendly The Ordinary toner at £10 for 100ml this toner is certainly worth it and remains in the affordable to mid-range beauty brands.

This AHA toning solution utilises 5% glycolic acid to brighten the complexion and regenerate dry, tired skin. The careful formulation of ingredients within the toner ensures this product will work miracles for those with every skin type – with aloe vera extract, the skin is soothed and hydrated, while ginseng ensures the tightening of the skin and promotion of circulation.

Whether it’s pigmentation, breakouts, or uneven skin that you’re struggling with, this solution will target these concerns and work hard to transform your skin from the first application.

Due to being alcohol-free, paraben free and cruelty-free, this product couldn’t be kinder to skin and the planet. Considered a cult classic in the skincare field, simply swipe a saturated cotton pad across your face and wait for the smoother skin results to appear.

3. Neals Yard Remedies Wild Rose AHA Toner

The natural beauty brand Neal’s Yard Remedies is known for their ethically sourced, organic ingredients. Every product is made to be kind to the skin and kind to the planet while remaining incredibly effective. The Neals Yard Remedies Wild Rose AHA Toner is one of their bestsellers – and for good reason.

This exfoliator retails for around £16.15 for a 200ml bottle and boasts an array of organic ingredients proven to benefit the skin. The most prominent ingredient is rosehip seed oil extract – a popular ingredient in the skincare field, this oil reduces the appearance of dark spots and scarring, tightens pores, and evens out the complexion to reveal rejuvenated radiant skin.

Extracts of caviar lime fruit and citric acid continue to exfoliate the skin and break down dead skin cells to leave the surface of the skin feeling hydrated and glowy.

This dermatologically tested product is designed to work wonders for all skin types, with these organic ingredients working effectively yet gently on the skin to naturally brighten and restore the face. If you’re new to exfoliants or know your skin is overly sensitive, I’d certainly recommend trying out this product.

I’ve been a fan of this organic beauty brand for years and always enjoy visiting a Neal’s Yard Remedies store to sniff and test their beautifully scented lotions and potions.

4. Clinique Clarifying Lotion 3

Sian Victoria © - Clinique Clarifying Lotion 3

Clinique’s Clarifying Lotion 3 uses a dermatologically developed and approved formula to create an incredible exfoliator that works wonders for those with combination and oily skin. Although this product is on the slightly more expensive side of the spectrum at £21 for 200ml, this cult classic high-end beauty brand won’t let you down.

This Clinique skincare BHA exfoliator uses salicylic acid to remove dead skin cells and unclog the pores on the face to refresh the skin and draw out impurities. The tried and tested formula minimises excess oil on the face and ensures the complexion remains smooth and rejuvenated. Simply sweep the product across the face – twice a day if your skin tends to be on the oiler side – and wait for the results.

Though this product is geared towards those with combination and oily skin, there are 5 formulas to choose from that are sure to be suited to your skin type and skin concerns. If your skin tends to be dry or sensitive you should try out the Clarifying Lotion 1, or, if your skin is excessively oily, the Clarifying Lotion 4 might be more up your street.

5. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Clarifying Lotion

Sian Victoria © - La Roche-Posay Effaclar Clarifying Lotion

The La Roche-Posay Effaclar Clarifying Lotion is a perfect choice for those dealing with acne-prone skin or large pores on the face. This astringent solution has been specifically formulated with sensitive skin in mind, using only the most necessary ingredients, meaning even those with the most sensitive of skin types will be able to use this solution and enjoy the benefits without fear of irritation.

Lipo-hydroxy acid features as a key ingredient within this popular La Roche-Posay formula, known for its exfoliating, acne-treating properties. This BHA ensures pores are decongested and skin cell turnover is encouraged, revealing refreshed and smooth skin. The gentle-to-skin, paraben-free formula means this product can be used daily on most skin types, making sure not to dry out skin or cause irritation.

From acne scarring and active breakouts to excess oil and blocked pores, this toner will ensure your skin is transformed. At £13 for 200ml, this product is slightly more expensive than its competitors, such as The Ordinary’s products, but promises to give you indispensable results after just the first use.

As you’ll see in this 3-step skincare routine I’ve been using the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Clarifying Lotion on and off since 2017. It was the first exfoliating toner I ever used and thankfully haven’t used a physical facial scrub ever since.

6. Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Night Pads

Sian Victoria © - Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Night Pads

Another trending brand on the cosmetic market that you’re likely familiar with is Nip+Fab, with their Glycolic Fix Night Pads product making it onto this list. This bestselling exfoliating product is noticeably different to the others I’ve mentioned, as it contains a collection of cotton pads saturated in the exfoliating formula, making this product convenient to use as it only requires you to swipe the pad across your face after cleansing.

These cotton pads are soaked in an effective formulation of glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acid. Specifically designed to target oily and acne-prone skin, this solution decongests pores, fades acne scarring, removes dead skin cells and leaves your complexion looking smooth, hydrated and even.

And, even with the numerous active ingredients in the product, the pads won’t irritate the skin and prove to be gentle despite their effectiveness. These exfoliating wipes for approx. £11.45 are slightly on the pricier side, but you’ll receive 60 pads for this price, which can be used a few times a week, with 1 being enough for a full exfoliation of the face.

I also use the same pad to give my neck, chest and shoulders an exfoliating swipe too. As you’ll find out in my vegan and cruelty-free summer skincare routine.

7. The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

Sian Victoria © - The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution is another fantastic formulation by this cult beauty brand. Retailing for just £6, you’re guaranteed to get your money’s worth with this fan-favourite exfoliator – designed to be used around twice a week due to its acidic formulation, the solution is sure to be long-lasting.

The combination of AHA’s and BHA’s, including glycolic, lactic, citric, and salicylic acid, means they work together to go below the surface of the skin to unclog even the deepest of pores, increase cell turnover and fight against blemishes and texture. These deep exfoliating properties are somewhat neutralised with Tasmanian Pepperberry extract, ensuring the solution is kind to the skin and remains soothing.

Unlike the exfoliator, I mentioned earlier created by The Ordinary, this product is applied a little differently – apply a thin layer of the solution onto the skin after cleansing, leave it on for no longer than ten minutes, and then rinse off.

Due to the active ingredients within the solution, it’s best not to use the product too often if you know your skin is sensitive or prone to irritation. Use the solution sparingly at first to ensure your skin can get used to acids.

My thin facial skin is very sensitive, so I can only tolerate keeping the solution on for approx. 4 minutes before it starts to tingle. When you feel it’s time, wipe away with a warm damp face cloth to remove all residue. I tend to use this once a fortnight and can visibly see the difference looking at my pores.

8. FaceTheory Glycolacsal Solution T4

Sian Victoria © - FaceTheory Green-C Rebalancing Toner

If you’re big on natural yet affordable skincare, this exfoliator is the one for you. Facetheory is an up-and-coming organic skincare brand formulating cutting-edge products that work wonders on the skin.

The FaceTheory Glycolacsal Solution T4 incorporates glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid. This combination of AHA and BHA’s works together to encourage the generation of new skin cells, unclog pores and dissolve impurities and oil on the skin.

This effective formulation helps dissolve any of your skin concerns, fading fine lines, and blemishes and tightening the pores to leave your face feeling smooth and even.

Despite the strength of the ingredients within the solution, the product remains alcohol-free and clear of any harsh chemicals that could potentially irritate. This means you can enjoy the product without fear of irritation, no matter what your skin type is. This solution is available for £16 for a 200ml bottle, so it is pricey, but it does deliver effective results and transforms your skin.

I’ve been using Facetheory since 2020 and can wholeheartedly say that they are one of the top-rated vegan and cruelty-free skincare brands right now.

9. PIXI Vitamin-C Tonic

Sian Victoria © - PIXI Rose Tonic & Retinol Tonic

Following on strongly from the skin-transforming Pixi Glow Tonic is the Pixi Vitamin-C Tonic. It’s another popular pick from the Pixi Skintreats collection. This exfoliator is a daily facial toner that harnesses the benefits of Vitamin-C to leave the skin feeling radiant, luminous, and hydrated.

Retailing for around £18 for a 250ml bottle, this product does have a high price point. However, if your budget stretches to this, this exfoliator is certainly worth the purchase. Formulated with a whole host of soothing citrus extracts and beneficial ferulic acid, the toner is anti-inflammatory and reduces redness and acne scarring while brightening the skin.

Plus, ferulic acid is a great antioxidant that repairs the effects of sun damage, making this product perfect if this is one of your skin concerns.

Whether it’s the Pixi Glow Tonic or this Vitamin-C Tonic that takes your fancy, both exfoliators are sure to give your skin the luxury treatment. If your complexion is dull or you suffer from skin damage or scarring, this may be the better choice for you. Vitamin C is perfect to brighten dull skin, you can discover how to achieve glowing skin in my summer skincare routine post using the Pixi Vitamin-C Tonic.

To conclude

So, there you go, just some of the best exfoliating facial liquids I’ve tried and tested over the years. If you’re not too sure about using chemicals and still prefer to use a physical scrub. Then The Body Shop Drops of Youth Liquid Face peel may be an ideal alternative between the two as it is in a liquid form but naturally creates gentle physical particles once applied and rubbed into the skin and is then washed away like a facial scrub.

Either way, for the health of your skin my top skincare advice would be to convert to a liquid exfoliator and ditch the harsh physical facial scrubs.
