Destinations Birmingham Airport Fly's to & its Departure Services
As a resident, I often depart from Birmingham Airport, one of the UK's top airports. Recently, the airport invited me and my fellow Birmingham bloggers to participate in an exciting duty-free shopping challenge. However, before I share the details of this experience, I will provide you with a comprehensive guide to Birmingham Airport so that you can be well-prepared for your first visit.
Located in the West Midlands, Birmingham Airport is the ideal gateway for travellers entering and exiting the UK. With its modern facilities and strategic location, it's no surprise that millions of passengers transit through the airport every year. Therefore, if you plan on departing from Birmingham Airport, here’s what you can expect from the airport's amenities and services.
Where Does Birmingham Airport Fly directly to?
Birmingham Airport has an extensive flight network that offers travellers the convenience of travelling to various destinations. From personal experience, I can attest to how grateful I am for the ease of travelling to familiar and exotic locations directly from Birmingham. The airport offers a broad roster of direct flights to numerous cities and countries worldwide, making it a standout international hub. Whether travelling for business, leisure, or visiting loved ones, you will likely find a flight that suits your requirements.
So, let's take a whirlwind tour of some of the most popular destinations to give you an idea of Birmingham Airport's connectivity. Within the UK and Ireland, there are direct flights to various locations, including Aberdeen, Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Guernsey, Inverness, Isle of Man, Jersey, and Shannon.
For those who wish to explore mainland Europe, the choices are extensive, with direct flights available to destinations like Alicante, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Lisbon, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Prague, Rome, Vienna, Zurich, and many more. The Mediterranean region is well-represented, with direct flights to places like Ibiza, Majorca, Malta, and Paphos.
Suppose you're looking to explore locations further afield. You can go directly to long-haul destinations like Cancun, Delhi, Doha, Dubai, and Punta Cana. Whether you're in the mood to soak up the sun in Antalya, discover the rich history of Dubrovnik, or explore the bustling markets of Marrakesh, the world is just a direct flight away from Birmingham. This network of routes not only underlines the airport's role in connecting the Midlands to the world but also ensures that travel planning is more convenient and stress-free.
Currently, the airport does not offer flights to destinations such as Australia, South America, Greenland, New Zealand, North America, Japan, Finland and many more. Nonetheless, with the routes and Birmingham airport continuously expanding, they may do so. However, these locations can be travelled from Manchester and London, the most significant and closest airports to this Midlands hub.

Getting to and From Birmingham Airport
Getting to and from Birmingham Airport is incredibly convenient and ideal for frequent travellers like myself. The airport is located near the M42, M6, and M40 motorways, making it easily accessible for those driving themselves or taking a taxi. Short—and long-stay parking options are available, so you can rest assured that your vehicle will be secure while away.
Suppose you prefer to travel around the West Midlands using public transport. In that case, you'll be pleased to know that the Birmingham International Railway Station is just a quick and easy ride from Birmingham city centre. Once at the station, you can use the free Air-Rail Link system to find yourself inside departures. This service connects the airport to the national rail network, making transfers hassle-free, especially if you have heavy bags to carry.
Direct routes to various destinations across the Midlands are available for those who prefer buses and coaches. This ensures that getting to Birmingham airport is the least of your worries, whether coming from the city or heading home after a long flight. With so many flexible transportation options, travelling to and from the airport has never been easier. Moreover, if you travel with a large group or have a lot of luggage, you may consider a 7 seater rental in Birmingham for added comfort and convenience.

Check-in and Security Procedures at Birmingham Airport
During off-peak travel times, check-in and security procedures at Birmingham Airport are quick and straightforward. The check-in area is well-signposted and easy to locate. If you have checked in online beforehand, you can save time. However, if you prefer face-to-face service or need to drop off your luggage, the desks are efficiently managed to move you quickly. Although, like most airports nowadays dealing with record numbers during peak times, you can expect delays at certain times of the year.
To make the process even faster, it's recommended that you have your liquids in a clear plastic bag and electronic devices ready for inspection. Remove all jewellery, jackets, and footwear and lay them neatly in the trays. Don’t overfill them; they’ll tell you to transfer them to another tray so they can scan the items effectively. This has saved me countless minutes during peak travel times. You may often notice that security staff are grumpy, and it's likely because they constantly ask people to do these simple tasks throughout their shifts. Therefore, I recommend doing it to make the process less stressful and save everyone time.
The fast-track option is available at an additional cost for those who want to breeze through security even faster. It's worth it if you want to spend more time in the departure lounge relaxing away from crowds instead of standing in a queue.

Shopping at Birmingham Airport
Those who enjoy shopping before flying can enjoy the variety of options available at Birmingham Airport. At the end of this post, I share my recent experience exploring the airport's retail offerings during a Christmas gifting challenge. While waiting for your flight, a spot of retail therapy is the perfect opportunity to find last-minute gifts, holiday outfits or travel essentials.
I particularly enjoyed browsing Accessorize, which offers fashionable accessories that can improve one's travel wardrobe, such as straw hats, sunglasses, and pendant jewellery. For those who want to relax before their flight, AeroSpa is an excellent choice. It provides express beauty services so you can relax and pamper before jetting off so that you arrive feeling your best.
Boots is the perfect place for travel health products and snacks. At the same time, InMotion offers a superb selection of the latest tech gadgets ideal for keeping one entertained on lengthy flights. Meanwhile, JD Sports provides a wide range of sportswear options, and I couldn't resist going to Kurt Geiger to get some designer shoes in the sale.
You’ll also find Sunglass Hut within the departure lounge, where you can grab some stylish eye protection. Superdry also has trendy travel outfits. The Travelex Currency Exchange offers competitive rates, and World Duty-Free is a must-visit for savings on luxury beauty brands. To complete the necessary pre-flight wait, don't forget to stop by WH Smith for books and magazines.
Food & Drink Places at Birmingham Airport
Foodies will appreciate the quality snacks and sandwiches available at M&S Simply Food, while Spar is perfect for picking up last-minute essentials. The range of outlets caters to some dietary needs and tastes, as I’ve never found it difficult to find something vegan or gluten-free.
The airport’s All Bar One is the perfect spot to relax with a glass of wine and a light bite. Alternatively, Bottega Prosecco Bar offers a glamorous start to your trip with its selection of sparkling wines. For those craving comfort food and drinks, Burger King and Greggs are perfect options, while Caffe Nero and Costa are my go-tos places for a caffeine fix. Factory Bar and Kitchen and Giraffe are ideal for those seeking hearty and international dishes.
Alternatively, Pret a Manger and SOHO Coffee Co. are excellent choices for a healthy and quick meal on the go. And, of course, no visit to Birmingham Airport is complete without a stop at Starbucks or Wetherspoon for a familiar cup of coffee or pint. Although not as extensive as some larger airports, you will find an ideal spot to dine or relax before taking off.
Lounges at Birmingham Airport
The lounges at Birmingham Airport are an excellent option for travellers seeking a peaceful break from the busy terminal. These lounges offer a range of amenities that ensure a comfortable and enjoyable wait.
As someone who has personally enjoyed the calm of the Aspire lounge before travelling to Croatia, I can confirm its value, particularly for those seeking a calm space to relax or catch up on work before their flight. I often find getting a seat next to a power supply challenging in public spaces unless you can grab a seat at Costa. Otherwise, a pay-to-visit lounge may be beneficial if you have a business to attend to, like me.
For a reasonable cost, the Aspire Lounge is a popular choice that accepts all passengers regardless of airline or travel class. It serves buffet food and drinks in a relaxed environment, providing the perfect spot to unwind.
The exclusive Emirates Lounge, designed for those flying with the airline, offers luxurious comforts, gourmet dining, and a wide range of beverages. I’ve never used the lounge, but I’m sure you’ll receive exceptional service and a completely relaxed atmosphere that meets their high standards.
In addition, No1 Lounge is known for its stylish interior and excellent service. It provides a premium pre-flight experience with a diverse food menu and a fully stocked bar. The even more exclusive Clubrooms cater to guests with their spacious, quiet areas and personalised service, including à la carte dining.

Getting Through the Terminals
The terminals at Birmingham Airport provide a hassle-free experience. With a single terminal layout, there is no confusion about where to go, making it a welcome change from larger airports. The clear and abundant signage guides you from check-in to security and your departure gate.
The interactive information screens dotted throughout the terminal are especially helpful, providing real-time flight updates and gate numbers to keep your trip on track. Although it's not a huge airport like London, that works to its advantage—it's easy to get around, so there’s no panic if you’ve wandered off too far and have to run to your gate.
In addition to the main public waiting area after the world duty-free store, you’ll also find some food and drink places near the gates. They don’t appear busy whenever I visit, as people often head straight to the first dining spots as you enter the departures. However, if you stroll down the gates, you’ll find other places to eat without the crowds.
Experiences at Birmingham Airport
Passengers who desire a seamless and enjoyable pre-flight experience can opt for VIP treatment with the concierge service provided at the airport. This is where a personal concierge will welcome you upon arrival, assist with your luggage, and guide you through priority check-in and security via the express lane.
Access to the Aspire Lounge can also be included for a modest fee. You can enjoy free Wi-Fi, runway views, and a quiet zone for uninterrupted rest or work time here. For an additional fee, a chauffeur-driven service offers lavish transfers directly from your doorstep in a Mercedes vehicle to deliver you to the airport on time and in style.
In addition, before boarding, you can pamper yourself at World Duty-Free with complimentary makeovers, fragrance samplings, and hand and arm massages, adding a touch of luxury to your airport experience. I learned about this experience when visiting with local bloggers during a beauty event hosted at the terminal.

Hotels Closest to Birmingham Airport
If you have an early flight or want to make the most of the pre-travel experience, you can find the perfect place to stay near Birmingham Airport, where a range of hotels cater to every need and budget.
During my recent trip, I stayed at the Novotel Birmingham Airport, which offered convenience and was located steps away from the terminal. If you're looking for more affordable options, the ibis budget Birmingham International Airport provides all the essentials without blowing your budget before you’ve even left the country.
At the same time, fellow travellers praise the ibis Styles Birmingham NEC for its unique style and vibrant atmosphere; I’ve stayed at a few ibis hotels in Birmingham and have always been pleased with the service, so that’s another excellent option to keep in mind.
For those seeking a bit more luxury, the Hilton Garden Inn and the Genting Hotel at Resorts World Birmingham offers a plush experience with top-notch amenities. Additionally, if you're looking for a youthful vibe, check out the Moxy Birmingham NEC with its chic design and lovely public areas.

Things to Do Near Birmingham Airport
If you have free time before or after your flight or want to explore the area around Birmingham Airport, you'll be pleased to know that Resorts World Birmingham is very close. It is one of my favourite hangouts, regardless of whether I’m jetting off.
This place is hard to miss, as it's shaped like a cruise ship next to Pendigo Lake in the NEC complex. It is one of biggest places for outlet shopping in the West Midlands, with various dining options and bars. It is also home to the luxury Santai Spa, perfect for unwinding before your flight.
The National Motorcycle Museum is also a must-visit for anyone interested in engineering and history. It offers an impressive collection that pays homage to motorcycles' rich legacy.
Suppose you're travelling with children or are a thrill-seeker. In that case, The Bear Grylls Adventure next to the resort is a leisure place to consider. It offers many activities, including indoor skydiving and high ropes courses.
Conveniently located, these attractions in Birmingham for kids offer a quick escape without straying too far from the airport. So, whether you're a solo traveller or with family, these spots will add an unforgettable twist to your itinerary.

Tips for a Smooth Departure from Birmingham Airport
To ensure a hassle-free departure from Birmingham Airport, check traffic reports or train times before leaving to avoid unexpected delays. Even though Birmingham has efficient transport links, it's always best to allow extra time for unforeseen circumstances.
I highly recommend downloading the Birmingham Airport app. This app provides up-to-date flight information, gate details, and security queue lengths, which can significantly reduce pre-flight stress levels.
Another helpful tip is to familiarise yourself with the airport's layout before arriving. Although Birmingham Airport is well-signed and easy to get around, having a mental map of the check-in desks, security gates, and departure lounges can save you valuable time, particularly if you have an early morning flight.
Lastly, staying hydrated and grabbing a bite before boarding is necessary to keep your energy levels up, especially if you encounter sudden flight delays or cancellations.

Birmingham Blogger Duty-Free Shopping Challenge
Recently, Birmingham Airport approached me to participate in their Christmas Gifting Shop-Off challenge with a fellow blogger from the West Midlands, Ally, from Ally in Blunderland. I gladly accepted the opportunity, and two weeks later, we visited the airport with a camera crew and picked out gifts for our family.
In addition, earlier this year, I was invited to World Duty-Free's #JetSetTour event, where I was treated to beauty treatments, champagne, and luxurious high-end cosmetics. It was a fun day, so I was excited to shop at Birmingham Airport again and take advantage of the duty-free discounts available at the terminal.
As a travel blogger, I’ve visited Birmingham Airport several times this year, such as when I had a connecting flight to China and then again when I went to Santorini and Spain. So, before boarding my flight, I always look forward to exploring the range of exclusive items that travellers can find at the airport, which are unavailable on the high street.
On the day of filming, three marketing professionals and three cameramen followed Ally and me as we searched for gifts for our mother, father, sister, and boyfriend while staying within a £150 budget. We were required to pick two of everything so that my Instagram followers could have a chance to win the fantastic gifts we were given for taking part in the activity!
I was a little nervous in front of the camera, but luckily, I had Ally, the seasoned vlogger, by my side. In this post, you’ll find the Birmingham Airport video we featured in.
The night before the shoot, I asked my family to look for items they wanted online. I was organised and knew exactly what I needed to get within one hour. If I had been shopping for myself, I would have chosen everything Ally had selected, as she had the trendiest Christmas gifts!
Nevertheless, I could purchase everything on my list within the hour, thanks to the helpful staff who found the products I needed after I showed them screenshots of my family's requests.
I picked out the Benefit Blushin Babe set for my mum from World Duty-Free, which cost £25.00. The set includes Real Mascara & Push-up liner, Watt's Up highlighter, Coralista face powder, Hoola bronzing powder, Dandelion brightening face powder, and Rockateur cheek powder. It's a fantastic beauty kit, and my mum has been trying to convince me to give it to her early. However, I have kept it hidden away until Christmas day.
I also got the Diesel Bad Eau De Toilette 50ml for my dad from World Duty-Free for £34.76. The fragrance usually costs £44.00 on the high street, so I made a fantastic saving of £9.24!
For my boyfriend, I bought the Sony noise-cancelling headphones from Dixons for £29.92. I often find buying gifts for him difficult; however, as his old headphones were recently damaged, that conveniently helped me find something he needed. Savvy shoppers like me can reserve products on Dixons and World Duty-Free websites and collect them before flying, making them highly useful while using discount codes.
Lastly, I got my sister a tan Croc handbag from Accessorize for £32.00. I spent under the £150 budget, with all four gifts totalling £121.68. This demonstrates the savings you can make by shopping duty-free at the airport and taking advantage of tax-free prices. After filming, we enjoyed some delicious food at Giraffe, where we tried some fantastic dishes.
