A night at PentaHotel, 4* Birmingham hotel

Cool dog friendly places to stay in Birmingham

As I live on the outskirts of Birmingham but spend a lot of time in the UK’s second city nothing beats a night away in the city centre so that I don’t have to cut my evening short and rush for the dreaded last train home (which is always full of loud intoxicated rebels!). So, I love when local hotels invite me to experience an overnight stay in my home city.

Birmingham has a variety of great hotels with a place to suit everyone’s budget and preferences. If it’s a modern, young, trendy and vibrant hotel you are after then PentaHotel may just be for you. Penta is a 4* hotel located just a 5-minute walk from New Street train station, so is in a perfect location near Brum’s most popular attractions.

Play & dine area

We visited PentaHotel on a Sunday and checked in at 3 pm. The first thing we spotted upon walking into the 7-storey hotel was the al-fresco balcony on the first floor which I imagine is lovely to sit on with breakfast during the warmer months.

Both the ground and first floor have a ‘Pentalounge’ consisting of spacious chillout areas packed with a variety of seating, large screen TV’s, snooker tables and a PS4. I especially liked the hanging disco balls as you walk up to the first floor via the metal staircase and the melting candle arrangement on the brick wall feature which makes the playroom cosy and welcoming to unwind with friends and a selection of food and drink from the hotel’s restaurant on the evening.

Penta rooms

During our stay, we were in a Penta Standard Room, in number 715. Directly prices are around £75 per night which is pretty good for a 4-star hotel in the city centre. Our room had a double bed with ‘Birmingham’ gracing the headboard along with a few iconic buildings to represent the cities Architectural Heritage which was a nice feature to see.

Next to the bed was a complimentary glass bottle of water and there was also tea & coffee making facilities in a wood storage box near the door which also doubled up as a strong metal clothes rail. Overall, the room was modern with an industrial style vibe from the choice of metal lighting as well as funky retro touches with the cerise pink scatter cushions, seating and old dial-up telephone.

I liked how the hairdryer was situated next to the full-length mirror and TV so that I could roll the comfy chair over and do my hair while watching The Big Bang Theory in the morning. The room also came with a large wooden desk so if you needed to work during your stay there is plenty of room to do so, or you could even work in the Pentalounge area. Our visit was strictly to chill out and relax on a Sunday afternoon, but if you fancy working out during your stay Penta has complimentary gym facilities.

The standard air-conditioned room was relatively spacious and suitable if you’re staying for a night or two to enjoy Birmingham’s city life. Whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, there are ironing facilities in the room to sort you out. Most of our Sunday was spent sipping on the complimentary prosecco and eating the strawberries dipped in chocolate while watching the large screen free pay TV. Although, we couldn’t get any Freeview channels and the complimentary wifi was slow on both our Android and iOS mobiles.

The bathroom came with a fantastic large walk-in shower with a rainforest shower head and four complimentary toiletries from the Anatomicals range consisting of body lotion, 2 in 1 shampoo & conditioner, hand soap and body wash.

It was also well-lit with plenty of mirrors and storage space so doing your makeup in the bathroom would be fine although I preferred to do it in the room so I could get a closer look at my makeup as the basin was too wide and spacious for short me to get close enough. There was also plenty of soft white towels and the room itself was very clean and light from the large floor to ceiling window.

Now onto my favourite bit of staying in a hotel, indulging in the buffet breakfast! It’s available until 10am weekdays or 10.30am weekends and costs £15. The selection of continental food & drink can be found in the Pentalounge on floor one. We picked some delicious pastries including a vegan croissant with jam inside, a bowl of soy yoghurt, cereal and fruit accompanied with freshly squeezed orange juice.

We of course had to try the hot breakfast food offering too, since the chef kindly came over to us and other guests to ask what we would like so that he could make it fresh for us. We ordered veggie sausages, beans, mushrooms and my partner had it with scrambled egg which he loved.

Overall, we were impressed with the great selection of vegetarian and vegan food on offer with there being a variety of dairy-free milk and yoghurts to choose from with some gluten-free options too. We enjoyed our visit and think it’s the perfect choice if you're seeking a cool place to stay with your partner, a bunch of friends or even your furry babies! I love that Penta is dog friendly and are making an effort to eliminate paper & plastic waste. Our highlights were certainly the gaming area and the delicious breakfast buffet!
