If you are into anything adventure-related, The Bear Grylls Adventure is the ideal destination to plan a visit. The moment you enter this recreation area, modelled on the adventures of the renowned explorer, you can start engaging in various athletic pursuits.

Located just steps away from Resorts World Birmingham and Birmingham International railway station, it's the ideal location to board a train, enjoy fun activities, and go shopping and dining afterwards.

You’ll find the tallest high ropes course in not just the West Midlands but all of Europe, allowing you to traverse over 36 difficult obstacles. If you and your friends are daredevils, this is not an experience to skip. In this hive of activity, there is also cage snorkelling, climbing walls, escape rooms, and iFly to try out to indulge in your sense of adventure.

This adventure park is ideal for kids, as well as a playground for adults. If you're daring enough, try your hand at shark diving, where you may swim right alongside the creatures of the deep. Don't worry; they look a lot smaller and friendlier than jaws. But you will have to get a doctor’s note beforehand to ensure you are in top health to do it.

Prices vary according to the activities you intend to do while there. I’m sure everyone in the family is bound to enjoy the variety of challenging activities available here. It’s unlikely you’ll find all eleven daring experiences anywhere else available all under one roof.

Booking the Bear Grylls Adventure, located in Solihull at the NEC, should certainly be considered when planning fun days out in Birmingham with children, too. During a recent visit, my sister and I enjoyed the climbing wall, high ropes, and shooting. We both agreed that the high ropes course was our favourite activity.

10. Mockingbird Cinema

Sian Victoria © - Mockingbird Cinema, Birmingham

Fancy catching an iconic film or bingeing on a theme night of TV shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer or the Lord of the Rings trilogy? Mockingbird Cinema is located in the iconic Custard Factory within Birmingham’s trendy neighbourhood Digbeth and is an independent, unique cinema showcasing iconic flicks, as well as a few current and independent artsy movies.

The building originally a Victorian factory, is trendy, with neon lighting fixtures and sleek, dark furnishings. Unlike any other, this cinema treats you to a unique viewing experience across its cosy seating spaces. You can choose from a selection of snacks before you watch your favourite movie on the screen, with the option to enjoy a variety of alcohol and independent coffee in Birmingham too.

And, to make things even better, the Mockingbird Cinema ticket prices are more affordable than your chain cinema. Enjoy weekday non-special event day tickets for £5.95, with students being able to experience a movie at a discounted price.

Most recently, I visited Mockingbird Cinema to watch the iconic 90’s Christmas movie Jingle All the Way with a ticket, drink and snack package.

11. Roxy Ball Room

Roxy Ball Room in Birmingham is a dynamic entertainment hub located in the heart of the city centre at Victoria Square, in the spot previously home to Kongs. As soon as you step inside, you'll be enveloped in a lively and industrial-style atmosphere, complete with graffiti walls and neon lights, setting the tone for an exhilarating experience.

The venue offers an extensive range of games and activities to cater to a diverse audience. For example, traditional tabletop games like pool and ping pong have no shortage of options to keep you engaged. You’ll also find shuffleboard tables, karaoke, basketball, and a mini-bowling alley that add a unique twist to your gaming experience.

To complement your gaming adventure, Roxy Ball Room serves up an American-style menu featuring a variety of finger foods like hotdogs, pizzas, wings, fries, and shareable platters. Their well-stocked bar provides a selection of craft beers, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages to keep you refreshed.

During our visit, we indulged in a delicious vegan mushroom & truffle pizza, with Roxy fries coated in BBQ seasoning and buffalo cauliflower bites. Accompanied by some fruity cocktails, with Purple Haze being my favourite of them all. After the energising food, we played an hour-long game of American pool, duck pin bowling and shuffleboard. We enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere, rock music and overall positive vibes of the venue.

Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or organising a corporate event, Roxy Ballroom offers a memorable setting with various packages to suit your needs. You’ll also find a photo booth to capture the moment.

Overall, Roxy Ball Room Birmingham is the ultimate destination for those seeking a dynamic and exciting night out. With its energetic atmosphere, diverse gaming options, and mouthwatering food and drinks, it's the perfect place to unwind, connect with friends, and have a fun night out in Birmingham.

12. GoApe

Sian Victoria © - GoApe treetop obstacle course, Coventry

If you love the sound of Bear Grylls Adventure and appreciate the great outdoors, you will most definitely enjoy this daring leisure activity in the West Midlands. GoApe claims to be the UK's #1 Outdoor Activities company. It is a treetop obstacle course that will certainly challenge you in parts – as you may find in my GoApe review where I shared my experience visiting for the first time.

The fully equipped adventure centre located outside in the wilderness of the lush green Cannock Chase Forest in Staffordshire as well as in Coventry at the picturesque Coombe Country Park is the place to go if you’re seeking an active day out with friends outdoors near Birmingham. My sister and I were eager to book a GoApe treetop adventure, so we decided to make a day of it and visited the Coventry attraction rather than our local Cannock one.

We enjoyed the forest views as we climbed amongst the treetops. There are several forest activities to experience at all Go Ape locations, such as the 260m high zip line, challenging rope bridges to cross, high-ropes to climb and a 12-metre vertical drop to jump off. As well as a forest segway experience to explore the grounds of one of the loveliest nature reserves in the West Midlands.

And after you’ve tired yourself from all the climbing, ziplining and jumping, why not let yourself go and have a bounce around in the GoApe nets adventure experience? Because you’re never too old to have fun. And if you’ve got any energy left, why not have a game of Axe throwing? You’ll also find a GoApe in Buxton. It’s one of the many things to do near the Peak District.

Sian Victoria © - The Bear Grylls Adventure, Birmingham

To conclude

So, there we have it – just a few of what I believe are the best things to do in Birmingham, suitable for a day out with all the family and big kids alike.

However, this list is not exhaustive; new entertainment spots are constantly opening in the city, so let me know about any exciting things to do in Birmingham that are going to be open for some time (not time-limited pop-up venues) and I’ll try to experience it and potentially add it to the list.

I’m hoping to do an escape room soon, although I’m not sure I’ve got what it takes to get locked in and solve puzzles. But I’ll be sure to share my experience when I visit one.

As the entertainment industry has had a difficult time in recent years, such as the ping pong venue Serve closing, which was a favourite of mine, I think it’s essential that we should give these venues and many more all the support we can.

If you fancy making a night of it. See my review of the top luxury hotels in Birmingham if you’re looking to splash the cash on an unforgettable night in the city or check out the best cheap stays in Birmingham if you’re on a budget.
