Gretna Green: Historical Wedding Destination at Scottish Border

Nestled in the lush countryside of Scotland lies the charming Greens at Gretna Hotel, a picturesque setting steeped in historical allure that has become a highly sought-after destination for couples looking to tie the knot. With its tradition of elopement weddings, Gretna Green is a symbolic and beloved location for those seeking an unforgettable and romantic wedding experience.

As the year drew to a close, I journeyed to Scotland to attend a family wedding at this traditional venue, a wonderful way to bid farewell to 2015. It was a joy to witness the happy couple exchange their vows at the Blacksmiths Shop after having been a part of their wedding planning journey.

During our stay, the wedding party and I enjoyed a variety of accommodations at the hotel and savoured a delicious dining experience on the eve of the wedding day. Before discussing the hotel, lets first establish why Gretna Green is a historical place to get married in Scotland.

The History of Gretna Green for Getting Married

The allure of Gretna Green as a wedding destination dates back to the 18th century when it became the first Scottish village English lovers would encounter whilst fleeing over the border. In those days, Scotland's marriage laws were more lenient, permitting irregular marriages outside the church's purview. This made Gretna Green an irresistible destination for couples seeking to marry without the constraints of English law.

The romantic essence of these love stories continues to infuse the village today, making it a popular wedding venue with enduring appeal. Despite changes in legislation over time, Gretna Green retains its distinctive charm, serving as a testament to the love and tenacity of those daring couples from the past. Today, the village remains a favoured wedding destination, attracting couples who seek a romantic atmosphere steeped in history and tradition.

The Charm of Gretna Green as a Wedding Destination in Scotland

The appeal of Gretna Green extends beyond its historical significance. It is a location where the past and present coalesce, resulting in an environment that is both sentimental and charming. The Famous Blacksmiths Shop, a traditional workshop where lovers exchange their vows, is a notable highlight. This emblematic landmark of Gretna Green's heritage provides a quaint and picturesque spot to profess one's love.

The clanging of the blacksmith's hammer is replaced by the tender words of commitment, signifying the joining of two hearts. By pledging your love and devotion in this time-honoured setting, you become part of a tradition that has lasted for centuries, lending a layer of meaning to your union.

As part of the ceremony, the couple ceremoniously places their wedding rings on an ancient anvil. It is said that the act of touching this historic blacksmith tool brings good fortune to the newlyweds.

Additionally, the verdant Scottish countryside that surrounds Gretna Green imbues the event with a sense of tranquillity and charm, creating a magical and serene atmosphere. Gretna Green is not merely a location to tie the knot, it is a place to commemorate love in all of its wonderful manifestations.

This location is also a well-known choice for couples who desire a meaningful ceremony to renew their wedding vows.

Where to Stay for a Gretna Green Wedding

After gaining a better understanding of Gretna Green's history as a popular destination for impromptu weddings, here is a review of a nearby hotel where the newlyweds and their guests can enjoy a wedding reception near the 'Famous Blacksmiths Shop' - which is one of the most symbolic venues for the ceremony at Gretna Green.

Greens at Gretna Hotel, Scotland

This was our first time visiting Scotland, so it was certainly a memorable visit coming for a wedding. Located just as you cross the border, the Greens at Gretna Hotel in Scotland is a perfect destination for anyone seeking comfort, convenience, and style. We spent two delightful nights in this hotel, which is currently undergoing refurbishment. Whilst some rooms were still being worked on, we could tell from the elegant reception area that the final result would be great.

The hotel boasts an open-plan reception, bar, and restaurant area, which exude a stylish and homely ambience. The ornate picture frames used to separate the spaces, the seating arrangement, and the lighting all work together to create a welcoming and sophisticated boutique feel. We enjoyed lounging on the comfortable sofas, which made for a perfect venue to celebrate a wedding and enjoy the food and drink.

The hotel's restaurant serves some of the most delicious food too with the menu offering a premium dining feel. The lemon cheesecake we had was exceptional and perhaps the best cheesecake we've ever tasted. It was so creamy and irresistible, and we were tempted to have seconds.

The Chicken Tequila was our main meal on the evening of the wedding reception, and it was full of flavour. The butterflied chicken breast with lime and tequila marinade, served with rice and roasted vegetables bursting with flavours, was cooked to perfection. We enjoyed it so much that we're already planning to recreate the recipe at home.

Although the rooms we occupied during our stay were somewhat dated before a scheduled renovation, I won't delve into specifics about the accommodation. Nonetheless, we found the rooms and services to be perfectly adequate for our short stay in Scotland.

Moving on to the wedding reception, we were pleased by the hotel organisers' ability to satisfy both guests and the newlyweds. The dining experience and wedding band entertainment hosted by the hotel were skilfully executed and contributed to an enjoyable evening.

With an excellent retail outlet park across the road and easy access to the hotel travelling from England, we had a lovely time at Greens at Gretna and would recommend it to anyone seeking an unforgettable stay in Scotland when visiting for a wedding.

To conclude

The Greens at Gretna Hotel and Gretna Green as a wedding destination offer a captivating blend of history and contemporary elegance that promises an unforgettable wedding day experience. With its rich history, lush surroundings, exquisite cuisine, and modern accommodation, every aspect of the venue comes together to create an extraordinary ambience.

Located in the enchanting town of Gretna Green, which is renowned for its romantic history and traditions, the Greens at Gretna Hotel exudes an irresistible charm.
