Benefits of Why You Need to Get Rid of Negatives to Be Happier

In our modern world, characterised by a frenzied pace and pervasive stress, negative thoughts and emotions can easily weigh us down. Unfortunately, holding onto such negativity can have serious repercussions, negatively affecting not only our emotional and mental states but even our physical health.

Therefore, we must make a conscious effort to eliminate negativity from our daily lives. By doing so, we can enjoy a more positive outlook and a more gratifying existence. In this post, we'll examine the many advantages of ridding ourselves of negativity, as well as practical steps for incorporating this practice into our everyday routines.

At the end of the post, I also go into detail discussing why this topic is relatable to me by sharing my own experience of having negativity in my life, and how I've made changes to overcome them to be a happier and more positive person.

1. Understanding the Impact of Negativity on Your Mental Health

Negativity is akin to a pernicious fog that infiltrates your mind, blurring your thoughts and diluting your mental acuity. Its all-encompassing presence can distort your perception, leading to a destructive cycle of negative thinking patterns that adversely impact your mental well-being. This consistent diet of negativity can exacerbate conditions like anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem, triggering a state of emotional turmoil that can be hard to shake off.

The most alarming aspect of negativity is that it has a self-perpetuating quality. Negative thoughts tend to generate more negativity, setting off a chain reaction that culminates in a vortex of pessimism. These patterns of negative thinking can become so ingrained in your mental fabric that they become your default response to life's challenges.

However, negativity is not a passive phenomenon; it is an active participant that can influence your decision-making process and judgement. It can instil a fear of failure that drives you to avoid taking risks and exploring new opportunities. This can lead to missed chances for growth and self-improvement, hindering your mental development.

What's more, negativity can amplify your perception of stress, causing manageable situations to appear insurmountable. This distorted view can exacerbate your stress levels, potentially leading to burnout. Such a negative outlook can also engender feelings of helplessness, creating a sense of being trapped in your current circumstances.

It is essential to comprehend the profound impact of negativity on mental health. By recognising its effects, you can take the first step towards combating it. The battle against negativity begins with awareness, which can pave the way for positivity to claim its rightful place in your mental landscape.

2. The Influence of Negative People on Your Life

Have you ever found that spending time with a pessimistic individual can affect your mood? Negative people tend to spread their gloom like a contagious virus, with their continuous stream of pessimistic chatter, endless complaints, and constant criticism casting a dark shadow over your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Their cynicism can infect your once-positive perspective, gradually transforming it into a mirror reflection of their own.

Negative individuals have a way of influencing you to doubt your abilities and adopt their defeatist mentality, leading to a lack of self-confidence and dampening your motivation to pursue your goals. Their focus on problems rather than solutions can create a barrier to your problem-solving ability, promoting a sense of hopelessness.

The constant negativity of such individuals can be mentally and emotionally exhausting, leaving you feeling drained and stressed. The physical stress responses, such as headaches, fatigue, and anxiety, are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the harm caused by persistent negativity. The unnecessary drama and tension that they bring into your life create a cloud of toxicity that can hamper your peace, happiness and need for prioritising self-care.

While it is essential to support and understand those going through tough times, it is crucial to set boundaries to protect your well-being. Learning to distance yourself from negative individuals can be a vital part of your journey towards a more positive, fulfilling life. It is imperative to be mindful of the company you keep, as their influence can significantly impact your emotional state and life outlook. Therefore, it is necessary to prioritise your mental and emotional well-being by avoiding such individuals and seeking positivity in your life.

3. How Negativity Can Hinder Your Personal Growth

Managing the cloud of negativity that can hang over us is a vital part of personal growth. True growth requires embracing change, learning new things, and stepping out of our comfort zones. However, negativity has a grip on us that can make it difficult to do these things. Fear of failure, a common result of negative thinking, can keep us from taking on new challenges and learning new skills. This, in turn, can limit our potential and prevent us from reaching our goals.

Negativity can also prevent us from learning from our mistakes. Instead of seeing a misstep as an opportunity to learn, we might beat ourselves up and focus on the mistake. This can harm our self-esteem and confidence, both of which are crucial for personal growth. Additionally, negativity can make us lose motivation and dampen our enthusiasm for our goals.

A negative mindset can also affect how we interact with others. We might avoid social situations or meaningful connections, which can limit our growth opportunities. Negativity can also prevent us from empathising with others, a vital skill for personal development.

The cloud of negativity can limit our thinking and hinder our problem-solving skills. It can prevent us from exploring new ideas and perspectives, which can hinder our intellectual growth.

However, recognising the negative mindset is the first step to shifting to a positive mindset. Doing so opens up new paths to unrestricted growth and self-development. With the right attitude and effort, we can overcome the cloud of negativity and reach our full potential.

4. The Impact of Negativity on Your Physical Health

The impact of negative thoughts on one's mental well-being is well-documented, but the effects can extend far beyond that realm. Negativity can be likened to an invisible toxin that infiltrates the body, setting off a chain reaction of physiological responses.

The resulting state of constant stress activates the body's fight or flight response, causing increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and elevated cortisol levels. The long-term effects of prolonged exposure to such a state can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, which highlights the substantial impact of negative thoughts on physical health.

Moreover, chronic negativity can hurt the body's immune response, which may make one more vulnerable to infections and illnesses. Negative emotions have been shown in numerous studies to lead to a lowered immune response, underscoring the role of positivity in acting as a shield against diseases.

Sleep disturbances are also common among individuals who experience negative thoughts, which may lead to issues like insomnia. The resulting lack of sleep can lead to a range of health complications, including obesity, diabetes, and cognitive impairments.

Furthermore, chronic stress induced by negativity can result in unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as overeating, smoking, or excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to an array of health issues, including obesity, lung disease, and liver problems.

The bottom line is that negativity not only darkens one's mental landscape but can also have tangible effects on physical health. Therefore, maintaining a positive outlook is critical not only for mental well-being but also for preserving physical health. By cultivating positivity, one can promote a healthy lifestyle, strengthen the immune system, and reduce the risk of a host of chronic health conditions.

5. Tips on How to Remove Negativity from Your Life

Liberating oneself from the shackles of negativity requires self-awareness as the first step towards recovery. This involves acknowledging and identifying the negative thoughts and emotions that permeate one's existence. Once these negative patterns have been recognised, the process of addressing them can commence.

  • Positive affirmations

A powerful technique to counteract negativity is the regular practice of positive affirmations. These affirmations can be used to remind oneself of their capabilities, achievements, and self-worth. The power of language is immeasurable, and its influence on one's mindset and emotions can be significant.

  • Mindfulness

Another useful strategy is the incorporation of mindfulness into daily routines. This involves being present and actively engaging in current activities, enabling one to let go of past regrets and future anxieties, both of which are major triggers of negativity. Mindfulness can be practised by focusing on breathing or simply appreciating the beauty around us.

  • Regular exercise

Regular exercise is also an effective tool in combating negativity, as it releases endorphins - the body's natural feel-good hormones, significantly boosting mood and mental well-being. Finding a physical activity that one enjoys, whether it's jogging, online workout classes, or calming yoga sessions, can help one achieve the benefits of regular exercise.

  • Get rid of negative influences

Eliminating negativity also involves carefully selecting one's company and minimising interactions with those who drain energy and positivity. Surrounding oneself with positive, uplifting individuals can significantly impact one's outlook and life experience.

  • Recognise when positive things happen in your life

Practising gratitude is another powerful technique in eliminating negativity, as it involves appreciating the small things that bring joy to life. This habit can help train the mind to focus on the positives and break the cycle of negativity.

  • Focus on self-improvement

Finally, investing time in personal development through reading uplifting books, listening to inspirational podcasts, or engaging in new hobbies can all contribute to enhancing self-confidence and reducing negativity in life.

6. The Benefits of a Positive Attitude

Approaching life with a positive outlook can be likened to opening a window on a refreshing spring morning, inviting in a gentle breeze of optimism that can permeate every aspect of your life. It acts as a powerful catalyst, elevating your self-confidence, mood, and overall mental well-being to new heights. Think of it as the radiant morning sun that illuminates and dispels the darkness of negativity, fostering an environment in which you can thrive and flourish.

With a positive attitude, you can view challenges as exciting opportunities that encourage you to aim high and reach for the stars. It plants the seed of resilience within you, giving you the strength to bounce back from life's setbacks and continue on your journey with unwavering determination.

Your positive perspective is not only an internal beacon of hope, but it can also be a contagious energy that inspires those around you to adopt a similar outlook. The ripple effect of your positivity has the power to transform not just your own life but also those in your inner circle.

Maintaining a positive attitude doesn't mean ignoring life's difficulties, but rather choosing to focus on the light that shines even in the darkest of times. It's about finding the silver lining in the stormiest of clouds, learning from failures, and uncovering the opportunities that exist within challenges. It's about truly savouring the highs and recognising the lows as stepping stones towards your ultimate success.

In essence, nurturing a positive attitude is like planting a sapling of optimism that can grow into a sturdy tree, providing shade and comfort in the face of life's toughest challenges. The benefits of a positive attitude are immeasurable and can make a significant difference in the course of your life's journey.

7. Maintaining Positivity in Your Life

Nurturing positivity in your life is comparable to caring for a garden. Consistent attention, nurturing, and a positive mindset are required. Cultivate encouraging self-talk by acknowledging your strengths, abilities, and accomplishments. Express gratitude daily, recognising the good things, big or small, that brighten your day. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle contributes significantly to mental well-being, including regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and sufficient rest.

It is vital to be mindful of the company you keep, surrounding yourself with positive individuals who encourage growth and inspire your aspirations. Nourish your mind with uplifting content like books, podcasts, music, or films that inspire and feed your soul. Positivity does not require the belief that life is always pleasant. Instead, it is choosing to see the sun behind the clouds, regardless of the storm, and recognising rain as necessary nourishment for life's growth.

Daily positivity is a conscious choice despite challenges, setbacks, and hurdles. Focusing on the blessings, and opportunities, and maintaining positivity enriches and fulfils life.

My Most Personal Post Yet

The year 2015 stands out as one of the most unforgettable and satisfying periods of my life. I am deeply grateful for all the opportunities that came my way. From an early age, I kept a bucket list of all the things I aspired to do and experience. In 2015, I was finally able to start ticking them off.

Since 2010, I have been managing an online vintage store, with listings on ASOS Marketplace, Depop, eBay, and a direct website through BigCartel. Running the business was very hectic, and I had no time for holidays or even relaxation. However, after 4.5 years of non-stop work, I realised that the store was a source of unhappiness for me. I made the difficult decision to let it go and free myself from the grind.

I took some online distance learning courses to regain my confidence and then decided to go back to full-time education in a physical university course. Initially, I had intended to enrol in university right after finishing college in 2010. However, I opted to become self-employed working from home instead of going down the traditional academic route. I have no regrets, though, because running the business introduced me to my love for marketing, advertising, and public relations in the digital realm. Without the vintage shop, I would have never stumbled upon blogging, something I also started doing in 2010 at the age of 19.

Being an entrepreneur was always my dream, and I relished the experience. But after working long hours for four years, barely seeing daylight, my physical and mental health began to deteriorate. I started to feel like I was missing out on the experiences of my youth, and the thought of never being able to reclaim that time was disheartening.

Nevertheless, I am grateful for the success of my vintage shop, as it enabled me to reap the rewards of my hard work and pursue my passions. With the income earned, I finally got to travel and tick off my bucket list items, which brought me immense joy and fulfilment. The year 2015 may have had its ups and downs, but I will always cherish it as a pivotal and transformative year in my life.

Transitioning from a business owner to a mature student was no easy feat, but it proved to be a decision I am immensely grateful for. Balancing the rigorous demands of university studies and the responsibilities of running my blog as a self-employed individual has certainly been a challenge, but it has allowed me to experience things that I never would have otherwise.

For four years prior, I had been consumed with reworking stock for people to wear at festivals all over the world, leaving me little time to truly enjoy the summer season for myself. Pursuing higher education was a pivotal moment in my life, marking the start of a more positive career trajectory and a path towards personal growth.

It was in 2015 when I finally got the opportunity to make up for lost time. My summer began with a week-long adventure in Ibiza, followed by a journey to the United States where I ticked off several items on my bucket list. I was awestruck by the bright lights of Las Vegas and captivated by the iconic Bellagio fountains, wandered the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame in California, and frolicked around Santa Monica beach as the sun set. We then ventured to Seligman, the birthplace of Route 66, and I felt as if I had been transported to a retro 50's movie, thoroughly immersed in the experience. To round out our American escapade, we took in the stunning views and natural splendour of the Grand Canyon.

Within days of returning home, I impulsively booked a two-week holiday to Spain, exploring Barcelona and marvelling at the incredible architecture created by Gaudi before trekking through the breathtaking Montserrat Mountains. Shortly thereafter, I was fortunate enough to attend London Fashion Week, thanks to the success of my blog, which served as a perfect conclusion to a summer filled with unforgettable experiences. Looking back, I am incredibly grateful for the decision to pursue higher education and the many opportunities that have resulted from it.

Throughout my college years, I took on various roles as a shop assistant, a CEO's personal assistant, and a marketing assistant. However, I found these experiences to be unpleasant and unsatisfying. It was only due to these negative experiences that I decided to take a chance and establish my own business at the age of 19. This had always been a dream of mine since a young age, as I had witnessed the freedom and independence my father had with his own business. I had played around with my business idea during school and university, but it was the negative experiences in my previous employment that motivated me to leap.

Whilst I embarked on this new path, I encountered challenges with toxic friends and family members who made my transition to self-employment challenging. It later became apparent that their negativity was a reflection of their dissatisfaction with their lives. Nonetheless, I persevered, forging my way. At the time, it was uncommon for young people in my community to start their online businesses, which led many to assume that I would fail. However, this negative sentiment only strengthened my resolve to succeed and prove the naysayers wrong.

Despite my strong drive for success, it eventually led to burnout and various physical and mental health issues such as insomnia, back and wrist problems, hair loss, headaches, weight gain, and depression. Running a business alone whilst trying to wear many hats left me crying at home, overwhelmed and stressed. Although I could have hired someone to alleviate the workload, I felt reluctant to hand over my business to someone who wouldn't share the same passion and care as me.

Eventually, I had to force myself to close the shop and focus on my blog, a healthier option that allowed me to have more freedom and enjoy life experiences without being tied to a physical product. Despite setbacks and failures, I believe that everything happens for a reason, and giving up should never be an option.

This year, I intend to improve the content of my blog and provide readers with more enjoyable content to read. I've already made some changes to how the blog looks, and I hope you guys like it too. As someone who has struggled with mental health, my New Year’s resolutions have always been the same, but this year I'm determined to push myself out of my comfort zone and travel more, eat healthier, and live every day to its fullest. So, expect to see more travel, healthy food recipes, and fun lifestyle posts soon.

In conclusion, my entrepreneurial journey was full of ups and downs, but it taught me the importance of taking care of my mental and physical health, finding a balance between work and personal life, and learning from my mistakes. I hope my story inspires others to never give up on their dreams and prioritise their well-being.

To conclude

If you find yourself trapped in a situation that makes you feel unhappy, whether it's a job, relationship, or a toxic friend or family member, you must take steps to remove yourself from the negativity. Instead, surround yourself with people who uplift, encourage and inspire you to be the best version of yourself.

Additionally, you must work in an environment where you feel content and have the potential to grow and develop. If the mere thought of going to work makes you dread your day, it's a sign that you need to make a change and seek happiness. You only have one life, so don't let excuses hold you back from living the life you desire.

Instead, leap, and make the changes that will enhance your life and allow you to reach your goals. Remember that in the future you will be grateful for the positive steps you took.
