Guide to Layering Undergarments: How to Wear Lingerie, Tights & Shapewear

Layering your undergarments is the way to go for looking put-together and feeling comfy, whether you’re dressing for everyday situations or something a bit fancier. The right combo of lingerie, tights, and shapewear can really give you the support you need, accentuate your curves, and help your clothes sit just right.

It’s not just about stacking on different pieces; it’s all about finding how they work together to keep everything smooth. Things like fabric choice, fit, and what you wear on top really matter when deciding on your undergarments.

This guide has some handy tips to make it all much simpler, so you'll feel confident and comfy no matter what you're dressing for. When thinking about your wardrobe details and what each piece does, you can make smarter choices that fit your style.

Whether you're just starting to layer or want to up your game, this guide will help you make choices that work for you. Plus, I'll be sharing some reviews of some lovely items I was gifted from the nostalgic British brand Pretty Polly.

1. Pick the Right Size

Picking the right undergarments that fit well is ideal for both comfort and style. If they don’t fit right, they can mess up your whole look and make you feel uncomfortable. Start by getting your measurements right. Grab a tape measure that's flexible enough to wrap around your bust, waist, and hips.

Remember, different brands can have different sizes, so always take a peek at their size charts. When you’re trying on lingerie or shapewear, look closely at how it sits on your body; you shouldn’t feel any pinching or gaping. Also, make sure it feels good when you move around; your undies should stay put without making it hard to move naturally.

2. Get to Know the Fabrics

The fabric of your lingerie and tights really affects how comfy they are, how long they last, and where you can wear them. Lightweight fabrics like modal or microfiber feel super soft, making them great for everyday use. Lace and mesh add a fancy vibe, perfect for date nights, but they might not hold up as well as thicker materials.

Satin and silk are luxurious but can be a bit delicate, plus they might not have the stretch or support you need if you're wearing them for a while. Tights usually come in synthetic materials like nylon or blends with elastane, which vary in stretch and thickness. High-denier tights keep you warm and cover up more, while low-denier ones are more sheer and delicate.

For shapewear, look for fabrics with a lot of elastane or spandex; they give you a snug fit without squeezing you too much. Always think about how the fabric feels and what you need it for when picking out your undergarments.

3. Layering for Everyday Comfort

When picking out your undergarments, go for pieces that are practical and easy to wear, matching them with what you usually put on. Lightweight options with fewer seams are great because they cut down on chafing or irritation, especially if you’re in them all day.

For bras, you might want styles with wider straps or soft bands that gently support without digging in. Team these up with knickers made of soft, breathable materials to keep you comfy all day long. If you wear tights, make sure to choose ones with a comfy waistband that stays put and doesn't squeeze too much.

When it comes to shapewear, look for medium support options that enhance your shape without feeling too tight. In colder weather, layering thicker tights with a smooth, supportive base layer can keep you warm while still letting you move freely. Just make sure everything lies flat against your skin to avoid any bunching or weird textures under your clothes. You want it to look smooth and seamless, like it's not there.

4. Styling for Special Occasions

When you’re dressing up for a special occasion, it’s best to go for undergarments that are both stylish and practical. Look for shapewear that boosts your outfit’s shape, like bodysuits for those fitted dresses or high-waisted styles for fancy gowns.

If your outfit has unique necklines or an open back, go for bras with straps you can adjust or adhesive ones to keep everything looking smooth. Also, pick undergarments made from soft fabrics without visible seams to keep everything sleek under those snug outfits. If you’re adding tights to your look, sheer styles or subtle patterns can add to your outfit without stealing the spotlight.

5. Focus on Colour Coordination

Picking the right undergarments can really tie your outfit together. If you’re wearing light or see-through clothes, go for lingerie shades that are close to your skin tone to keep it low-key. For darker or brighter outfits, matching your underwear to your clothing colour makes everything look more put-together.

When it comes to tights, make sure they either blend in with your skin or match the colours you’re wearing. You could even choose patterned tights to add a fun touch, but just make sure they don’t clash with the rest of your look.

For special occasions, matching your lingerie with your outfit's colours can really amp up your style and make you look more polished. And if you want to go for a bolder look, pairing a lace bra in a striking colour with a bit of an open top can show off some cool details in a stylish way.

6. Make the Most of Your Shapewear

Shapewear is really about making your natural curves look even better and giving some support where you need it, so picking the right piece is necessary. Think about the outfit you plan to wear and choose shapewear that smooths or defines the areas you want. For instance, high-waisted styles are great under fitted pants or skirts, while bodysuits give you a seamless look under dresses.

Look for pieces with flat seams and soft fabrics to keep things comfy and minimise visibility. Features like adjustable straps and closures are super handy for getting a fit that feels just right and makes it more personalised.

When you're rocking shapewear, aim for it to be snug but not too tight, because that can mess with your comfort and how easily you can move around. If you’re layering, lightweight options that blend well with your lingerie and tights are best to avoid extra bulk. And don’t forget to go for top-notch materials so your shapewear holds up over time, even with regular wear.

7. The Role of Tights

Tights are a great addition to your wardrobe because they mix practicality with style. They come in all sorts of thicknesses, so you can pick the right pair for the season. Thicker ones keep you warm, while sheer styles add a touch of elegance. You can also find tights in a bunch of colours and patterns, turning them into a fun statement piece that adds personality to your outfit.

For work or formal events, stick with neutral shades and smooth finishes for a polished look, but if you're going casual or want to express your creativity, textured or funky designs are perfect. Just make sure they fit well and have a comfy waistband to avoid any slipping or pinching.

When you're layering tights with other pieces, seamless or no-show options are the way to go to keep things smooth. And if you're going to be on your feet for a long time or travelling, compression tights can offer a little extra support and boost circulation. When trying out different styles and features, tights can easily enhance a variety of looks and occasions while keeping things functional and stylish.

8. Prioritise Breathability

Choosing breathable fabrics for your underwear is best for staying comfy all day long. Fabrics like cotton, bamboo, and moisture-wicking blends are great because they let air flow through, helping to keep your body temperature in check and reducing sweat-related discomfort. These materials work really well for layering because they help prevent overheating and keep you feeling fresh, even after wearing them for a while.

When you're picking out tights, try to find styles with mesh panels or cool weaving techniques that boost airflow without losing out on style or support. For shapewear, look for designs that have breathable areas or lightweight compression fabrics to strike a good balance between function and comfort.

It's also a good idea to check how your lingerie is made; steer clear of those with too many layers or synthetic linings that can trap heat. Making sure your underwear fits well is key, too, since tight clothes can block airflow. When mixing breathable materials with a good fit, you can have a practical and enjoyable experience no matter what you're up to.

9. Caring for Your Undergarments

To keep your underwear looking good, always check the care labels for washing and drying tips. Handwashing is usually the safest bet, especially for delicate stuff like lace and silk or anything with fancy designs.

If you’re using the washing machine, go for a gentle cycle and toss your pieces in a lingerie bag to cut down on wear and tear. Make sure to grab a mild detergent made for delicates to keep the fabric feeling nice and stretchy.

Avoid fabric softeners with shapewear, though, because they can mess with the material. When it’s time to dry, just lay your stuff flat on a clean towel or a drying rack to avoid stretching. Don't toss them in the dryer, though, as you’ll end up ruining their elasticity and fibres!

Proper storage matters too; fold tights and shapewear neatly to avoid snags and hang bras to keep their shape. Store your underwear in a dry, cool spot, away from direct sunlight or too much heat, which can weaken the fabrics over time.

10. Experiment with Styles

Trying out different styles of lingerie, tights, and shapewear is a fun way to discover what looks and feels best for your outfits. Don’t hesitate to mix and match textures, patterns, and cuts to create unique looks for any occasion.

For something fun, try layering bold patterned tights under simple dresses to spice things up, or pair high-waisted shapewear with a lace bralette for a stylish and supportive vibe. Getting convertible bras and multi-way lingerie is a smart move, letting you get more wear out of your wardrobe.

Look for pieces that highlight your favourite features, like plunge bras for low-cut tops or fun patterned tights that show off your legs. Experimenting with different styles helps you find the right combo of comfort and fashion. Seamless shapewear works great under fitted dresses, and bralettes under oversized tops can feel fantastic too. You’ll soon nail down how to style and layer your undergarments to look and feel amazing!

11. Tackling Common Concerns

Dealing with stuff like waistband rolling or slipping straps can really mess with your comfort. To fix this, check out designs with reinforced bands or silicone grips for a better hold. When layering tights or shapewear, make sure everything sits smoothly to avoid any bulges or bunching under your clothes.

If your straps are digging into your shoulders, go for adjustable styles with wider straps to spread the pressure more evenly. If your tights are always laddering, it might be worth investing a bit more in higher-quality ones with reinforced toes and heels to last longer. And to dodge those visible lines, choose seamless or no-show options that lay flat against your skin. Tackling these common issues not only boosts comfort but also helps your undergarments support your overall look.

12. Embrace Confidence

Confidence starts with feeling good in your underwear. When your lingerie or shapewear fits well and matches your style, it boosts your confidence in how you look. Picking pieces that accentuate your shape while giving enough support can really help you stand tall and feel comfortable.

Don’t be afraid to try out different styles and textures that show off your personality; it's all about those little details that make you feel special and sure of yourself. The right undergarments can totally change how you feel in your outfit, helping you to embrace a positive vibe. It’s not just about looking good; it’s also about choices that reflect who you are. Finding that balance between comfy and cute means you’re all set to take on whatever the day brings.

Pretty Polly Review: Lace Lingerie, Shapewear & Sock Tights

A while back, my friends and I were super into Pretty Polly tights. During our punk phase, we rocked all kinds of cool styles like leopard print, hearts, stripes, and stars—if it was funky, we wore it. As I got older and shifted away from that grungy vibe, jeans became my go-to, and I ditched the tights in the summer or stuck to plain ones in the fall and winter.

I hadn't really thought about Pretty Polly for ages, but they reached out to me recently to check out some pieces from their new A/W17 collection. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much they’ve evolved! Now they offer gorgeous lingerie sets, shapewear, and a fantastic range of tights, including body toners and options for curvy gals and short girls like myself.

The first thing that grabbed my attention on their site was the beautiful Natasha Lingerie Set. It’s got this stunning black lace design that feels super soft thanks to the silky microfiber finish. The lace detail on the back of the Brazilian knickers is a nice touch, making them look ultra-feminine and flattering. Plus, they’re holding up really well after a couple of washes.

Then there's the Tessa Bralette, which is this comfy, sporty option made from nylon and is non-wired. I wanted the matching boxer shorts, but they were out of stock. This bralette fits way better than the Natasha one, so definitely check the size guide to get it right. Or see my bra fitting guide for tips.

Pretty Polly is also famous for their tights. Fun fact: Beyoncé ordered 150 pairs of their Secret Socks tights for her Super Bowl halftime show! Of course, I had to try them out too because if they’re good enough for her, they’re good enough for me. They’re super stylish and flattering, so I can't wait to wear them out!

And let’s talk about those Aristoo hourglass Bodytoners! You know how sometimes you grab tights in a bigger size to pull them up for that “suck it all in” effect? Well, that’s a regular move for my sister and me. I gave these a shot, and surprisingly, they’re really comfy for shapewear. They help define your shape without feeling like they’re squeezing the life out of you. I’m excited to rock them at London Fashion Week this month.

Pretty Polly's a classic British brand, making hosiery and lingerie in the UK since the ‘80s. So, I’ll definitely be peeking at their online store for more tights and undies now that I’ve been reintroduced to a brand I adored during my rock chick days.

To conclude

Layering undergarments is all about finding the right mix of comfort, function, and style. Grab pieces that vibe well and go together with your style to boost your confidence and look great. Focus on the fabric and fit so your lingerie, tights, and shapewear work well with your outfits.

Don't be afraid to experiment with styles that show off your personality, while also providing the support you need. Taking care of your pieces and choosing fun colours can help them last longer and give you more options. With a little thought, you can make your outfits look seamless and flattering. So go ahead and improve your style with undergarments that feel great and suit your fashion sense!
