Moddershall Oaks Countryside Spa Day Retreat
Luxury spa retreat in Staffordshire
Sometimes the fast-paced city life can get a little exhausting, rushing my way around Birmingham going from event to event, university lectures, scrambling my way onto delayed trains, studying and running a business while trying to have a social life can all get too much at times. I’m certainly not complaining I love what I do, but I’m sure everyone can agree taking a break, even if it’s just for a day, can do wonders to recharge your mind and body.
Since I’ve sadly not done any traveling this summer as I’ve been overwhelmingly busy juggling projects, I jumped at the chance when Moddershall Oaks offered me a complimentary Wellbeing Spa Day in the countryside with a plus one. They obviously didn’t need to convince me to take up their kind offer, a full eight hours away from the city to spend some quality time with my partner was an opportunity I was not going to miss out on.
Arrival drinks in the Deli Cafe
Moddershall Oaks is a country spa retreat hidden away in acres of beautiful woodland in Staffordshire. It’s a modern resort that has it all. From a beautiful wedding venue overlooking a lake, stylish hotel rooms, a gourmet restaurant offering al fresco lakeside views, a gym, deli café, tennis court, a woodland trial for walking and bicycle rides, beauty treatment rooms, sauna room, experience showers, a relaxation lounge with a log burning fire and a heated indoor and outdoor hydrotherapy pool.
My partner and I couldn’t wait for a day away from our laptop lifestyle, so on a Monday morning we set out early and made our way down the M6 and arrived at Moddershall Oaks surprisingly early as we expected traffic. We were booked in for a 9am – 5pm Wellbeing Spa Day with a two-course lunch and full use of their indoor and outdoor spa facilities.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by reception who got us checked in and gave us a mini tour of the resort along with welcome drinks, towels, flip flops a fluffy robe and our table reservation time. We couldn’t wait to get the day started so we knocked back our strawberry Bellini’s and put our belongings in the locker rooms and requested some bikes.
Bike ride around the countryside
Along with two bikes, a helmet and a High Vis jacket we were given a ‘cycle, walking & running map’ with three different routes to take and the distance and approximate time it can be done in. As it’s been awhile since we last rode bikes we decided to be lazy and take the shortest route. Along the journey we saw horses and beautiful countryside. It was lovely because it was foggy so looking into the distance and seeing an eerie mist in the woodland and the fallen orange and red leaves reminded me that my favourite time of year is fast approaching.
Woodland trail & tennis court
After getting changed into something a little more practical, we headed to the tennis court. My partner and I are competitive, especially when it comes to playing sporty games so it was fun having the court to ourselves, with nobody around to witness our terrible tennis skills. When it began raining we decided to walk the woodland trail and take shelter in a cosy shed fitted with a sofa, blanket, books, wi-fi and a lakeside view. Nearby was also a hammock, which would have been a perfect quiet relaxation spot among the trees if it wasn’t raining.
As we made our way back into the resort we walked past the lakeside wedding venue where we spotted a cute rabbit hopping around. To finish off our morning workout we did five minutes each on the treadmill, cross-trainer, rowing machine and a few squats and weights in the gym. After working up a sweat, we headed to the showers to freshen up using the ELEMIS hair & body products provided in the cubicle before heading to the restaurant for our table reservation.
Two course lunch
It was great not having to stress over doing my hair, makeup and picking out an outfit to go to a restaurant. I simply strolled into the lakeside restaurant with my robe and flipflops on among a few other guests. The two courses were also quick to come out as when you check in they take your order, which was perfect as I was hungry I hadn’t eaten since my 5am breakfast (there is a deli bar by reception as well as an ELEMIS shop).
For starters, my boyfriend had the Heritage tomatoes, focaccia, wasabi mascarpone, pine nuts and pickled shallots and I had the salmon and haddock fish cake, these were both beautifully presented and tasted lovely. However, the highlight was the vegetarian main course: Portobello mushroom burger, red onion jam, cheddar and triple cooked chips. We both thoroughly enjoyed this dish and later that evening both said how we wished we were eating it all over again. The bun was toasted which gave the meal its necessary crunch when biting down on the soft slippery mushroom, we both made a mess but it was so worth it, we also really enjoyed the burger style sauce too and obviously those chunky chips!
Indoor spa facilities
After chomping down a good’ol veggie burger it was time to finally relax and enjoy the resorts spa facilities. We started indoors first, and did a few laps of the swimming pool before dipping into the heated hydrotherapy pool. We tried to get photos of the pool in full action with the showers etc, but it was difficult as I obviously didn’t want to take photos of people in their swimwear or annoy anyone. We also used the steam room, heated marble beds, experience shower and reflexology footbaths which were nice, especially the steam room.
Outdoor spa facilities
All day the weather had been dull and drizzly, however by afternoon the skies had begun to brighten up just in time for us to enjoy the outdoor vitality spa pool. The outdoor heated pool surrounded by cosy seating and a wood burning fire has got to be the highlight of the spa day (besides the incredible burger!). It was lovely just sitting in the pool surrounded by the greenery outdoors and getting cosy in the relaxation lounge which felt incredibly homely with lit candles, sofas, pillows and blankets (sorry, I couldn’t really take photos of this as people were in there napping so it didnt feel right to take photos).
Overall, we both really enjoyed the spa break, it was great getting outdoors, munching on a delicious veggie burger and taking advantage of the indoor & outdoor spa facilities and cosy relaxation room.
If you want to see more photos please head over to my Facebook page, where you’ll find over 70 photos from around the resort (it took me a day and a half to lighten them all up as the typical British weather made them all so dark. Also, although the resorts wi-fi was good for browsing, it did struggle to upload photos and videos to Instagram and twitter so my full insta-story didn’t post, but I did manage to save some of it and put it on Facebook).
If you’re looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of city life and you enjoy the outdoors, gourmet food and simply want a relaxing day or night cosying up by a wood burning fire, taking a dip in an outdoor heated pool among the countryside not too far from home than Moddershall Oaks may just be for you. Spa packages start from £85.
Disclaimer: A big thank you to Moddershall Oaks for the complimentary spa break. All words and photos are my own.
