As the days get warmer, I daydream about my next trip, excited to break away from the usual routine. With all the travel restrictions and uncertainties about going abroad, I feel opting for a bit of staycation within the UK might be just the ticket for our summer adventure this year.

Thankfully, the United Kingdom is packed with lovely places offering a wonderful mix of relaxation, excitement, and cultural experiences. Whether you fancy a scenic beach holiday, a peaceful countryside break, or an action-packed city getaway, the UK has something to suit everyone.

The UK's different landscapes make it a perfect destination for people like me who like to experience scenic trails and lose themselves in nature. In this blog post, I will run through the UK staycation spots you won't want to miss, especially for those looking for walking holidays, something I always crave when searching for staycation ideas and British holiday destinations.

The Cotswolds is a gorgeous region in England, offering a perfect staycation destination with charismatic villages, rolling hills, and historic market towns. The beautiful honey-coloured limestone buildings give the landscape a distinctive and inviting feel, making you feel like you've stepped back in time.

If you're a fan of walking, you must experience the Cotswolds Way, a 102-mile trail with breathtaking views and stunning scenery. You can enjoy the area's outstanding cultural legacy by visiting ancient castles, stately homes, and traditional English gardens.

Don't miss out on the local cuisine – you can enjoy hearty British fare and delicate pastries in cosy pubs and quaint tea rooms. Whether wandering through the vivid lavender fields near Snowshill in the summer or exploring the historic streets of Chipping Campden, the Cotswolds offer an idyllic backdrop for a truly immersive UK staycation.

2. Cornwall

My family and I adore Cornwall. It's hands down one of the most incredible places to visit in the UK. The coastline is fantastic, and there's much to explore. Cornwall is known for its rugged cliffs, beautiful beaches, and crystal-clear waters, which make it an absolute paradise for beach lovers, surfers, and anyone who enjoys coastal walks.

The South West Coast Path is a must-try. It takes you through lovely fishing villages like Padstow and St Ives, where you can indulge in delicious seafood and experience unusual art scenes. The last time we visited, we watched an artist balancing rocks on the beach, which was surprisingly fascinating.

Besides its natural beauty, Cornwall is infused with history. You can visit the legendary Tintagel Castle, steeped in the lore of King Arthur, and wander through the remarkable biomes of the Eden Project, home to plants from all corners of the globe. Families will have a ball exploring Cornwall's sandy beaches, castles, and gardens, each offering a glimpse into this part of England's fascinating past.

Some of my most precious memories with family are strolling along the windy cliffs, feeling the sea breeze in my hair, and gazing at the great Atlantic Ocean. For this and many other reasons, Cornwall is undoubtedly one of the best spots for a staycation because it always has something new to offer, whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both.

3. Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands is an amazing place to visit! The land is jagged and stunning, with massive mountains and still lakes. It's a peaceful escape with so much to explore. The history and folklore are intriguing, and there are many castles and ancient sites to visit. If you're into outdoor activities, there's plenty to do, like hiking up Ben Nevis and spotting all the wildlife.

And the Highland Games are just something else. The traditional sports, dancing, and music give you a taste of Scottish culture. Driving along one of the UK’s most scenic roads at the North Coast 500 is breathtaking, and you get to see so many charming villages and distilleries on the way.

If you’re brave enough, you can also go kayaking on Loch Ness, which is the perfect activity if you hope to catch a glimpse of Nessie. But that’s not all. There are many other fun adventures, too, even if the chances of seeing Nessie are slim. With its stunning scenery, rich culture, and friendly locals, the Highlands will always be a top staycation destination in the UK!

4. York

York is something else—full of fantastic history and culture. The old buildings, especially York Minster, take you back in time. Walking through the Shambles feels like stepping into the past with its beautiful old buildings.

What's excellent about York is that it's not just about history – it's also a lively city that mixes old and new. The food scene is diverse, with traditional tea rooms and modern gastropubs. One of the highlights for many is the ghost walk, which is both exciting and informative, sharing some spooky stories from York's past.

Whether travelling with family or going solo, York has much to offer. The National Railway Museum is a must-see, with its fantastic collection of trains. The city hosts various festivals throughout the year, making the streets come alive. In short, York is the perfect place for a great staycation, with its mix of history, fun, and attraction.

5. Bath

The city of Bath is a top British landmark with its stunning architecture, rich history, and natural hot springs. The Roman Baths are incredibly fascinating, showing off a beautiful ancient spa that has attracted visitors worldwide. As you wander the charming streets, you can't miss the elegant Georgian buildings that give Bath its distinctive character. The Royal Crescent is a perfect example of the city's 18th-century design.

Of course, you can't leave Bath without experiencing the natural hot springs. The modern Thermae Bath Spa offers a fantastic way to enjoy the healing waters with its rooftop pool and breathtaking city views. Bath is also a great starting point when looking for a staycation near London. While here, you could also visit the nearby Cotswolds, giving you the best of both locations and a taste of city sophistication and rural appeal.

For fans of literature, Bath's connection to Jane Austen adds an extra layer of fascination. There are museums and walking tours dedicated to celebrating her life and works, and they're worth a visit. Whether exploring historic sites, taking a stroll along the Avon River, or enjoying the delicious food at artisan cafes, Bath is the perfect place for a staycation filled with relaxation and discovery.

The Lake District is a mesmerising place that has fascinated poets, artists, and nature enthusiasts for generations. Whether you're into hiking, boating, or just taking in the peaceful surroundings, the region offers endless opportunities for exploration.

One of the top things to do here is to take a relaxed boat cruise on Lake Windermere, where you may enjoy the spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. If you're looking for more excitement, the hiking trails around Grasmere offer stunning scenery and the chance to visit Dove Cottage, the former residence of the poet William Wordsworth.

The Lake District also features charming villages with welcoming pubs and independent shops, making it a pleasant place to sample local food. Don’t leave without tasting the sticky toffee pudding! It takes over the streets with creativity every August.

For the most stunning views, make sure to trek to the top of Arthur's Seat, an ancient volcano that offers a scenic escape from the city's active ongoings. The Royal Mile stretches from the impressive Edinburgh Castle to the magnificent Palace of Holyroodhouse. It is lined with medieval buildings and intriguing alleyways, each with a fascinating story, taking you on a captivating journey back in time.

On a recent UK summer adventure, I went to Devon, a region in South West England famed for its stunning coastal views, extensive moorlands, and lush countryside. Devon has two different coastlines: the rugged cliffs and great waves of the North and the peaceful bays and lovely South harbours.

Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks offer expansive surroundings with wild ponies and secluded valleys to explore. If you're into maritime history, you shouldn't miss visiting the historic naval port of Plymouth, with its old streets drenched in seafaring tales from days gone by.

A visit to Devon offers foodie lovers enjoyable food and drink experiences, from delicious Devonshire clotted cream teas to fresh seafood from the clear waters. The county's delightful market towns like Totnes and Bideford offer unique shopping experiences with local crafts and produce.

I enjoyed strolling through the ancient streets of Exeter, where the magnificent cathedral shares the stories of the county's rich history and cultural heritage. With its perfect mix of coastal beauty, rural charm, and historic sites, Devon is a must-visit spot for a memorable UK staycation.

9. Snowdonia National Park

Snowdonia National Park is breathtaking in North Wales, with its gorgeous natural beauty and plenty of outdoor activities. The park is known for its beautiful peaks, especially Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. It offers some fantastic hiking trails suitable for all skill levels. One of the most extraordinary memories I have of Snowdonia is watching the sunrise from the summit of Snowdon. It was an incredible experience that showcased the park's astounding beauty. Snowdonia isn't just about natural wonders; it's also home to villages like Betws-y-Coed and Harlech, where you can explore historic sites, including a UNESCO World Heritage Site castle, providing a wonderful Welsh cultural experience.

The park's stunning views, including serene lakes, cascading waterfalls, and dense woodlands, create a peaceful sanctuary away from the chaos of everyday life. Every visit to Snowdonia reveals something new, which makes it a superb option for anyone planning a staycation in the UK. Whether you're into hiking, sightseeing, or just unwinding in nature, Snowdonia has something for everyone.

10. Norfolk

Norfolk is a beautiful county in the East of England. It is known for its stunning natural settings, diverse wildlife, and historical landmarks. It's a great place for a peaceful retreat and exploring busy market towns.

One of the must-do activities in the area is taking a boat trip to Blakeney Point, where you can see the famous seal colonies up close in their natural habitat. Another fantastic way to experience Norfolk's beauty is by hiring a boat to explore the Broads National Park, revealing a network of waterways offering a unique county perspective.

For history and culture enthusiasts, a visit to the Norwich Cathedral and the ancient castle is a must. Additionally, visiting towns like Aylsham and Holt on market days is a great way to experience the local life and cuisine.

Cromer is a pleasant seaside town known for its iconic pier, beautiful beaches, and delicious Cromer crab. The city offers a classic British seaside experience with activities ranging from beachcombing to enjoying fresh seafood.

Wells-next-the-Sea is another lovely coastal town with colourful beach huts and nature walks. Norfolk's landscapes, wildlife, historical sites, and easy-going way of life make it a perfect destination for a British seaside family holiday.

When I think of Dorset, I see a beautiful gem on the map of UK staycation spots. It's famous for its stunning Jurassic Coast and has been picked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This coastline is renowned for its geological sights and fossil-rich beaches.

A personal favourite is Durdle Door, which features an iconic limestone arch, and the pebbled Chesil Beach, which is a must-visit attraction with breathtaking backdrops for adventurers and travel photographers. Apart from its coastal appeal, Dorset is dotted with pretty villages, each with its unique history told through landmarks like Corfe Castle's and Lulworth Castle's ruins.

During my visit to Dorset, one of the highlights was enjoying a traditional Dorset cream tea in a sunlit garden café. It was a simple yet perfect moment while exploring the county's distinct landscapes and heritage sites.

Dorset's lively arts scene, including galleries in Bridport and literary festivals celebrating the works of Thomas Hardy, adds depth to the culture of this English region. Whether you're drawn to the countryside's peace or the coastline's dramatic sights, Dorset promises an immersive experience that sums up the true spirit of a British summer.
