Natural skincare & Sustainable SPF Skin Protection

To prevent premature skin ageing and to keep our skin looking its best for longer. Adding a facial SPF to your beauty regime will make all the difference and should be worn on the skin all year round.

As it’s not just the sun’s rays that are causing skin damage and ageing. The harmful blue light emitted from our digital devices is ageing our skin too. According to studies, blue light can shrink and kill skin cells. For this reason, the blue light filter on my mobile and desktop is permanently turned off.

Ever since my nan was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on her nose and chest almost seven years ago. I’ve made sure to up my SPF game. Especially since I have fair skin which experts say is a skin group more at risk of sun damage, leading to burnt skin and developing moles and skin cancer.

Although regardless of your skin type, wearing an SPF is essential for skin health.

Whenever I go for a facial or skin consultation, we discuss beauty tips and the expert’s number one skincare tip is always advising the use of facial SPFs. So, here are a few sunscreen products for the face I recommend. As a bonus, they are also vegan and cruelty-free.

1. Green People - Age Defy Tinted DD Moisturiser SPF15

If you have sensitive skin like me and are looking for an organic and natural sunscreen that will also provide flawless coverage than the Green People Age defy tinted dd moisturiser with an spf15 might be perfect for you.

It contains sea fennel plant stem cells to stimulate cell renewal and to increase hydration. As well as Spanish needle to stimulate collagen production and promote skin rejuvenation. The clean concentrated formula made of 97% natural ingredients provides UVA/UVB protection so it will care for your skin while you dual screen your digital devices.

The tinted moisturiser is available in light and medium and will provide subtle coverage and a healthy glow. I find that it conceals my redness well and is a great option for when you want a makeup-free day but still seek light coverage for an even complexion.

As I crave a sun-kissed tan all-year-round but shouldn’t be sunbathing with my skin type and history of skin cancer in the family. I chose to use a facial self-tan cream instead. For years I’ve used the No7 Naturally Sun Kissed Gradual Facial Tan. But since going vegan and cruelty-free and using only non comedogenic ingredients I swapped to the Green People gradual tan moisturiser (£18.50) which I find is more suitable for my sensitive acne-prone skin type.

2. Niod - Survival 30

For some time now I’ve been obsessed with deciem brands. Especially The Ordinary and Niod. I’m pretty sure everyone knows about the revolutionary budget skincare brand The Ordinary. However, the premium brand Niod is a little lesser known but deserve the same cult status as its sister brand.

Niod is a little more expensive yet even more so advanced when it comes to scientific skincare. A facial SPF that didn’t let me down while spending two weeks outdoors soaking up the Romanian sunshine, was the Niod Survival 30 (£25).

Noid Survival 30 is an SPF30 with UVB and UVA protection while also protecting against a broad selection of environmental and lifestyle-related assaults such as pollution, smog, stress, infrared and blue light.

Although Survival 30 has a tint of colour which is suitable for all skin tones it is not considered to be a tinted cream or form of makeup. The pigment of colour comes from the advanced active ingredients such as Lutein, Fractionated Melanin and Pycnogenol® among many others which work together to absorb light and minimise photodamage and dermal elasticity loss.

3. The Ordinary - Mineral UV Filters SPF 30 with Antioxidants

The brand that needs no introduction is, The Ordinary. I’ve been a loyal fan for almost four years and have tried pretty much everything they have to offer. Their products never disappoint my 30-year-old oily, blemish, sensitive and fair skin.

A product I was eagerly awaiting the launch of was the Mineral UV Filters SPF 30 with Antioxidants which offers a Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB Protection in combination with antioxidant, hydration, and anti-irritant support.

The affordable non-comedogenic facial SPF is formulated with active ingredients that neutralise free radicals and minimises the intensity of UV radiation penetrating the skin.

4. Coola - Makeup setting sunscreen spray

Protecting your lips from sun damage is equally important as protecting your face. Its skin after all. So, always opt for a lip balm with SPF. Ideally with a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB too. Whether it’s sunscreen for the face, body, lips, or scalp always pick the product mentioning ‘broad spectrum’ to ensure you have the best protection.

Coola is a brand I’ve mentioned previously in my skincare regime and holiday essentials blog post. Most of their products are made up of 70%+ Certified Organic plant ingredients that are naturally effective and drench your skin in antioxidant-rich nutrients.

A lot of their products such as the makeup setting sunscreen spray and full spectrum 360 refreshing water mist come in a spray bottle which is a effortless way to top-up your SPF protection while you’re on-the-go.

5. Sun Bum - Original Broad Spectrum Facial Sun Cream SPF 50

As featured in my vegan summer skincare routine post. Sun Bum are a fun surfer brand with a conscious and offers a variety of skin, hair and lip care products containing SPF to ensure you are protected against the sun.

Sun Bum are plant-based, gluten-free, paraben-free, sulphate-free, and cruelty-free. All their sunscreens are also free of Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. These are two toxic chemical ingredients that are widely used in SPF products that have been found to be harmful to coral reefs. So, their products are compliant with the Hawaii Act 104 Reef regulation.

The Sun Bum Original Broad Spectrum Moisturising Facial Sun Cream with an SPF 50 is a must if you are seeking a lightweight fast-absorbing lotion to wear alone or under makeup ahead of going out. It offers a broad-spectrum UVA / UVB protection that leaves an invisible matte finish.

Recently while on holiday in Cornwall with friends and family I offered them to try my Sun Bum face lotion and after just one use they have become converted and quickly ordered their own. Neither of us burnt or broke out in spots after using this and all agree that it glides lovely on the skin and doesn’t leave any residue feel.
