Fira - Exploring the Capital of Santorini

Exploring the stunning capital of Santorini - Greece

Fira is the capital of Santorini and its home to beautiful whitewashed buildings, such as churches, museums, and cathedrals. There is a great nightlife and atmosphere in Fira, with plenty of bars, shops hotel's and restaurants that have stunning iconic views of the blue domes and volcano.

The first minute of the video above shows me exploring Fira, from walking my way up the steep cobbled paths to check out different viewpoints of the caldera. The views of the volcano and Thirasia island are stunning from Fira. On the first day we visited the capital, we had lunch at the V Lounge and it had some fantastic views, it was so lovely just sitting down to relax, eating great food and taking in the dreamy views, we didn't want to leave the place so I can understand why Fira and Oia are so popular with tourists and cruise ships.

Our hotel was in Karterados, but we spent a lot of time in Fira as it was only a 15 minute walk away, we would stroll up on the evenings and enjoy the atmosphere. On occasion we would eat at a pitta bar around the corner from the main bus station, you could get a delicious salad and chips in a pitta for 2.10 euros. The place was popular with backpackers who were travelling on a budget.

Fira has more steep paths compared to Oia and other places on the island, I'm not the fittest person in the world but it wasn't so bad if you just take breaks and hide in the shade for a few minutes. If you're planning on visiting Fira please avoid getting a donkey ride, as the owners treat them terrible (I've written about donkey rides here), as an alternative use the cable car, it's quicker, cleaner and doesn't encourage harm to the donkeys.
