Are Lip Oils Better Than Lip Balms? and Best Lip Oil Ingredients
After providing a guide on how to nourish lips, many individuals have sought out lip oils to achieve hydrated, plump, and glossy lips. These oils offer both immediate satisfaction and long-term advantages, unlike other traditional lip care products. They provide a unique blend of nourishment and aesthetic appeal, which has made them a beauty regimen essential.
However, what distinguishes lip oils from other products, and how can you select the best one for your lips? This guide will give you with all the necessary information about lip oils, including their key benefits, ingredients and how to include them into your daily lip care routine.
What's the Difference between Lip Oils and Lip Balms?
The main difference between lip oils and lip balms is rooted in their composition and how they provide moisture. Lip balms rely on a formula made of wax that creates a surface layer on the lips to retain moisture and fight dryness. Although it works well to provide instant relief, it may not address the underlying cause of dryness.
Conversely, lip oils are enriched with natural oils that penetrate deeper into the skin to hydrate from within. This approach offers a quick fix to chapped lips and nourishes them over time for better health and resilience.
Lip oils are also known for infusing essential nutrients and fatty acids into the lips, making them look naturally fuller and more vibrant. While both lip oils and balms serve the same purpose of moisturising the lips, lip oils go a step beyond by providing holistic care for healthier and happier lips. So, overall, I find that lip oils are better than lip balms since they contain better ingredients too.
What Oils are Best for Nourishing Lips?
The reason why lip oils are considered a superior choice for lip care lies in their powerful ingredients that provide nourishment and hydration. The perfect combination of natural oils plays a necessary role in delivering the desired effects that are celebrated by lip care enthusiasts. The following list contains some of the most effective oils known for their supreme benefits to the lips:
1. Coconut oil: With its ability to moisturise deeply, coconut oil is an excellent source of fatty acids that help in replenishing lip moisture, making it an essential ingredient in nurturing lip oils.
2. Jojoba oil: With its unique ability to mimic the natural oils produced by our skin, jojoba oil is easily absorbed and offers a soothing and softening effect that is particularly beneficial for chapped and dry lips.
3. Argan oil: Loaded with Vitamin E and essential fatty acids, argan oil is a luxurious treat for the lips, providing both hydration and a barrier against harmful environmental aggressors.
4. Rosehip oil: Known for its regenerative and healing properties, rosehip oil works wonders in improving the texture and appearance of lips, thanks to its rich content of vitamins and antioxidants.
5. Sweet almond oil: With its gentle yet effective emollient properties and high vitamin E content, sweet almond oil is perfect for sensitive lips and provides moisturisation and smoothing.
6. Shea butter: Though technically a butter, shea butter is often liquefied into oil form and is respected for its intense moisturising and conditioning benefits, making it a perfect ally against dry and cracked lips.
7. Grapeseed oil: Lightweight and non-greasy, grapeseed oil is favoured for its ability to lock in moisture and its abundance of antioxidants, which protect the lips from oxidative stress.
So, consider incorporating lip oils formulated with these natural ingredients into your lip care routine, you can significantly enhance the health and appearance of your lips. Each oil offers unique properties, from healing to hydrating, ensuring that there is an option tailored to meet the needs of every lip type.

How to Choose the Right Lip Oil
When it comes to picking the perfect lip oil, it's a highly individualised process that's dependent on your unique needs and preferences. The key to this process is to identify what you're looking for in a product and what your desired outcome is. Are you in search of deep hydration, or are you more interested in a product that offers both hydration and a hint of colour?
If you prioritise hydration, choose lip oils that contain hydrating ingredients in addition to the above such as glycerine or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients are excellent at providing long-lasting hydration for your lips.
On the other hand, if you want a product that gives you a tinted glow, look for options that contain natural pigments. Additionally, you should consider the applicator type since it can affect the overall user experience.
Rollerball applicators offer a soothing massage-like feeling, while doe-foot applicators provide a more precise and controlled application. By taking these factors into account and evaluating your personal lip care goals, you'll be able to choose a lip oil that meets your needs and improves your daily lip care routine.
How to Apply Lip Oils
To make the most of applying lip oil, it's important to use the correct technique. Before beginning, make sure your lips are clean and free from any leftover products. This prepares the surface and helps the oil penetrate deeply, giving your lips the nourishment they need.
Apply a small amount of oil with the applicator, starting in the middle and working outwards to ensure even coverage. For extra fullness, you can add a second layer. Unlike traditional lip balms, lip oils provide long-lasting hydration, reducing the need for frequent touch-ups.
Ways to Add Lip Oils to Your Daily Lip Care Routine
To add lip oils into your daily lip care regime, you can achieve beautiful, healthy-looking lips with ease. Start your day by applying a thin layer of lip oil as a hydrating primer before applying any lip colour, which will ensure a smooth, flake-free application.
Keep a lip oil in your bag for on-the-go touch-ups throughout the day, providing much-needed hydration and a refreshing, glossy sheen that enhances any look. To create a customised, high-impact glossy finish without sacrificing moisture, mix a drop of lip oil with your favourite lipstick for an added evening-out lustre.
Finally, before bed, apply a generous layer of lip oil for an intensive treatment that deeply nourishes and repairs your lips while you sleep, taking advantage of your body's natural recovery process. These simple steps ensure that your lips stay revitalised, plump, and healthy-looking every day, for a truly radiant smile.

Review: Lancome Juicy Shaker Nourishing Lip Oil
During a recent complimentary shopping trip at World Duty Free with fellow Birmingham bloggers at Birmingham airport, I had the pleasure of being gifted with the Lancome Juicy Shaker in the 'Mangoes Wild' shade. I was impressed with how lovely it smelled, how it felt, and how it looked on my lips.
So, when Lancôme sent me their latest shades 'Piece of cake' and 'Show me the honey', which are set to be released on the 31st of August, I couldn't wait to try them out along with my other high-end beauty haul products I picked from the beauty event.
The Lancome Juicy Shaker claims to provide well-nourished, glossy lips with a natural-looking pigment. This unique bi-phased formula has sweet almond oil, omega 3, and cranberry oil, which explains why the product smells so amazing. Additionally, these oils are good for your lips, as they melt on the lips and keep them soft, nourished, and kissable. Applying the infused lip oil is simple- shake it well, and then use the sponge applicator to contour your lips, which is an easy and mess-free way to apply the product.
While both the new colours look beautiful on, bear in mind that your lips won't be as full a shade as you may think. Once applied, you will get a subtle tint of colour, along with shiny, glossy lips that will give your lips a fuller look. Personally, I love using these shades, as who wouldn't want to have bigger-looking lips? 'Show me the honey' gave me a sheer wash of glossy tint, while 'Piece of cake' is my favourite shade, as I love how the red colour looks on my lips compared to the orange shade.
The packaging is both cute and compact, and I love how my lips feel so hydrated and lovely after application. However, the product's longevity is somewhat limited, and you may need to apply it regularly throughout the day. I’ve added these shades to my makeup collection, however I’m likely to opt for darker colours like the 'Piece of cake', as I noticed that the colour is more noticeable than the lighter shades.
