How to Get the Best Out of Your Hairdryer: Guide to Hacks

When it comes to getting salon-worthy hair at home, having a good hairdryer is a game-changer. But just owning one isn’t enough; you need to know how to use it right. This guide has 12 must-know hairdryer tips that’ll help you get beautiful hair without all the fuss. Whether you want more volume, sleekness, or that perfect bounce, these tips will certainly improve your drying routine.

I’ll also be sharing my experience at the This Morning Live event in Birmingham, where I was a guest of Panasonic Beauty. They treated us to a nice dinner at Resorts World Birmingham before we hit up the popular event.

We got to watch live demos, have our hair styled by pros, and even pick a product to take home. I chose the Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer EH-NA65, so I’ll give you my thoughts on that at the end. But first, let’s look into some essential hairdryer tips to help you nail that perfect blowout!

1. Pick the Best Hairdryer For You

When picking a hairdryer, it’s important to think about its features and what works best for your hair type. Having adjustable heat settings and different speed options is necessary for customising your drying experience.

A hairdryer with higher wattage means more power, so you’ll be able to dry your hair faster. Look for ones with modern tech like ionic or ceramic, which can help tame frizz and boost shine, giving you that smooth look you want.

Plus, a lightweight model is super handy, especially if you’ve got long or thick hair. Don’t forget to check for a long cord, too, since it makes moving around while drying way easier. When choosing one with these features, you'll have a versatile tool that meets all your styling needs.

2. Use the Correct Heat Setting

When it comes to hair, the heat settings really depend on what type you’ve got. If your hair is fine like mine or already a bit damaged, it’s best to keep the heat lower to avoid causing any more trouble. Thicker hair, on the other hand, can handle higher settings for a quicker dry.

It’s always smart to start low and turn it up only if you have to. Excessive heat can really mess with your hair and make it dry out and cause hair breakage, so it’s important to adjust as needed. For fine hair, the coolest setting is best to keep it healthy. Medium heat is perfect for normal hair, as it's a nice middle ground for drying without the risk of damage.

High heat is really only for thick or coarse hair, and even then, use it sparingly. Switching up your heat settings regularly can also help reduce heat damage to your hair over time. Plus, keep in mind the state of your hair; if it’s damaged or colour-treated, go for cooler settings to avoid making things worse.

3. Dry Hair in Sections

Drying your hair in sections is a great way to get an even and quick blow-dry. It helps you focus on one spot at a time, making sure each part is dried and styled just right. Start by splitting your hair into a few sections, usually around four to six, depending on how thick or long your hair is. Use some clips to hold each section in place; this keeps everything neat and organised. Start with the bottom sections and then work your way up.

When you’re drying each section, pick a brush that works well for your hair type to help you get the look you want. A round brush can give you nice volume and curls, while a paddle brush is perfect for a straight, smooth finish. Point the dryer down the hair shaft to help smooth out the cuticles and make your hair look shiny.

Take your time with each section to avoid overdrying or skipping any damp spots. When going through this methodically, you’ll end up with a polished look, almost like you just walked out of a hair salon!

4. Invest in a Diffuser

A diffuser is ideal for anyone with natural curls or waves. It distributes air nicely, reduces frizz, and really helps show off your hair's natural texture. This handy attachment is great for keeping your curls looking defined and shaped. To use it, just attach the diffuser to your hairdryer, flip your head upside down or tilt it, and gently place sections of your hair into the diffuser. Use a light scrunching motion to boost the curls and add some volume.

Keep the heat setting low to medium so you don’t mess up the curl pattern and end up with frizz. Move the diffuser around your head slowly, making sure all parts of your hair get dried evenly. This technique lifts your roots and gives your hair some extra body, helping you achieve those bouncy, defined curls or waves.

If your hair is finer, try using the diffuser on a lower speed to avoid tangles. For thicker hair, you might need to increase the heat a bit to get the best results. It’s all about experimenting with what works for you and your hair type. Once you start using a diffuser regularly, it can totally crank up your hair-drying routine, giving you those gorgeous, natural-looking curls every time.

5. Make Use of the Concentrator Nozzle

A concentrator nozzle is a super handy attachment for drying and styling your hair just right. It helps channel the airflow to specific spots, making it easier to smooth things out and create those defined looks. Just pop the nozzle onto your hairdryer and aim it down the length of your hair to help flatten the cuticles and cut down on frizz. This is great for when you want sleek, straight styles.

While drying, grab a brush to guide your hair and boost the nozzle's effectiveness. A round brush can add volume and curls, while a flat brush works best for that straight, smooth finish. Keep the nozzle moving so you don’t focus too much heat in one area, which could cause damage.

For the best results, start drying at the roots and move down to the ends. This lifts the roots for extra volume and gives a nice, even look. If you have layers, make sure to concentrate on the ends to highlight your haircut’s shape.

Using a concentrator nozzle can also cut down on drying time since the airflow is more focused. Try out different brushes and techniques to see what works best for your style. This little attachment can seriously help you achieve that polished, salon-quality finish!

6. Maintain a Safe Distance

Keeping your hairdryer at the right distance is best for keeping your hair in good shape. Aim for around 15 centimetres away; this way, you’ll dry your hair well without causing damage. If the heat gets too close, you risk split ends and dryness since that intense heat can strip away moisture and proteins in your hair.

Tilting the dryer a bit helps spread the heat around better, so you won’t end up with those annoying hot spots that can mess with your hair. Plus, keeping a little distance lets air flow better, making drying faster but not too rough.

If your hair's colour-treated like mine or already in bad shape, it’s absolutely necessary to stick to this distance so you don’t make things worse. So, just double-check how you’re holding the dryer to avoid any mishaps. Keeping it at a safe distance will keep your hair shiny and strong, giving you healthier, awesome-looking locks.

7. Apply Heat Protectant

Applying a heat protectant before using your hair dryer is necessary to keep your hair safe from heat damage. These products act like a barrier, helping to reduce the chances of dryness, breakage, and split ends. When you’re picking a heat protectant, choose one that works for your hair type, whether it’s fine, curly, or thick, to get the best results.

Before you start drying, just spray the protectant all over your damp hair, paying extra attention to the mid-lengths and ends, since that’s where the most damage tends to happen. Give your hair a good comb-through to make sure the product is evenly distributed and every strand gets coated.

Some heat protectants even have bonus features like controlling frizz, adding shine, or providing UV protection, which is great for shielding your hair from the sun. Using a heat protectant not only helps protect your hair from high temperatures but also keeps it moisturised and strong.

Making this quick step part of your hair-drying routine can really improve the health and look of your hair. It lets you style your hair without risking its integrity, leaving it smooth, shiny, and full of life.

8. Cool Shot for Long-lasting Style

A favourite of mine is the cool shot feature on hairdryers as it's perfect for setting your hairstyle. It works by blowing out a burst of cool air, which helps seal the hair cuticle. After you’re done drying and styling, just switch on the cool shot to lock everything in place. Not only does this help keep your hairstyle in place, but it also adds shine by closing the cuticles, making your hair look smooth and polished.

To make sure your hairstyle is on point, use the cool shot after drying each section. If you're going for curls or waves, hit each curl with the cool shot before moving on. If you straightened your hair, a final burst of cool air can keep it sleek and reduce frizz.

Plus, if you want some extra volume, lift the roots with a brush and hot air, then use the cool shot to set that lift for all-day bounce. Just remember to keep the dryer moving so the cool air doesn’t make your hair feel stiff by concentrating on one spot. Using the cool shot in your routine will help you achieve that long-lasting, salon-worthy look.

9. Avoid Over-drying

Over-drying your hair can really mess it up. Using too much heat strips away the natural oils, which makes your hair dry, brittle, and more prone to breaking. To avoid this, take notice of how your hair feels when you’re drying it and be sure to stop when it’s dry enough!

One handy tip is to keep your hairdryer moving around. This way, no area gets blasted with heat for too long. You might also want to let your hair air-dry a bit before hitting it with the dryer. Gently towel-drying by patting the strands can help cut down on your drying time.

Using a heat protectant spray can really help, too! It protects your hair from the heat and helps keep it moisturised. Also, try using a lower heat setting to keep your hair's natural hydration intact.

Don’t forget to give some extra love to the ends of your hair since they’re the oldest and most fragile. If you spot any dryness or damage, it could be a good idea to take a break from heat styling to help your hair bounce back.

10. Clean the Hairdryer Regularly

Over time, your hairdryer can collect hair and dust in its filter, which can mess with how well it works and might even lead to overheating. To keep your hairdryer running smoothly, it’s a good idea to give it a clean every now and then.

Start by unplugging it for safety. Find the filter cover, usually at the back, and take it off. Use a soft brush or an old toothbrush to gently brush away any gunk and dust you see. If there's some stubborn dirt, a vacuum with a small nozzle can help suck up the bits stuck inside.

After you’ve cleaned the filter, check the rest of the hairdryer for any buildup or grime. Wipe down the outside with a damp cloth to get rid of any product residue or dust. Cleaning it regularly not only makes your hairdryer last longer but also helps with airflow, which is super important for drying your hair efficiently.

Try to clean the filter every few weeks, especially if you use your hairdryer a lot. Good maintenance helps to keep the motor from working too hard, letting your hairdryer do its job well. Plus, a clean dryer will dry your hair faster and more evenly, leading to better styling results. Taking care of your hairdryer is a smart move for both the device and your hair’s health.

11. Store the Hairdryer Properly

After using your hairdryer, let it cool down before putting it away. Store it in a dry spot to keep moisture at bay. When you're done, don't wrap the cord too tightly around the dryer, as it can get damaged over time. Instead, just loosely coil it up and use a tie to keep it together. This helps prevent any kinks and keeps it in good shape.

It’s a good idea to keep the hairdryer in a drawer or a special storage bag to shield it from dust and any accidental bumps. If you have attachments like diffusers or concentrators, keep them all in one spot for easy access.

Taking care of your hairdryer this way not only makes it last longer but also ensures it’s ready to go when you need it. Plus, storing it securely helps keep it from toppling over and breaking. Make sure to check the cord regularly for any frays or damage, and replace it if it looks worn out to stay safe while using it.

12. Experiment with Styling

A hairdryer isn’t just for drying your hair; it's actually a pretty neat tool for trying out different styles. With a little practice, you can whip up all kinds of looks for any occasion. If you want a blowout with lots of volume, grab a round brush to lift your roots and curl the ends for that bouncy vibe. But if you’re after a sleek and straight look, a paddle brush will help you get that smooth finish.

Don’t forget to switch up the attachments! A concentrator nozzle is great for controlled drying, perfect for those defined styles. And if you want to enhance your natural curls or waves, a diffuser can help keep your texture while reducing frizz.

You can also play around with the airflow direction. Drying your hair upside down is a fantastic way to get some extra lift at the roots, while directing the airflow down from roots to ends can smooth out your hair and boost shine.

And don’t overlook the cool shot feature! It’s awesome for setting curls or waves, or just giving straightened hair that final touch. Trying out these different techniques can help you figure out what works best for your hair type and the look you’re going for.

Event Experience: TML Birmingham With Panasonic Beauty

A few weeks ago, my fellow Birmingham beauty bloggers and I were invited by Panasonic Beauty to attend the popular show, This Morning Live, at the NEC. I had never been to one of the ITV events before, so I was looking forward to star-spotting, especially the dynamic duo, Holly and Phil. I even walked past Martin Lewis, who was casually heading to the train station with a big smile on his face.

Before the event, Panasonic Beauty and the lovely PR team from Popcorn treated us to lunch at the Robata Bar and Grill, located inside Resorts World Birmingham, just a short distance from the NEC. We enjoyed a bottle of fizz, and I opted for the sesame-crusted salmon with Asian slaw, served up with a bowl of fluffy jasmine rice. The meal was delicious and the perfect pick-me-up before heading to the live show with nine other Birmingham bloggers.

Upon arriving at This Morning Live, we had the privilege of sitting in the front row to watch Trinny perform a beauty and fashion transformation on one of the audience members. Afterwards, we wandered around the stalls before heading to our scheduled time slots with Panasonic Beauty. There, we were treated to either a facial using the Panasonic EH-XT20 3-in-1 Facial Enhancer with micro-current technology or a hair styling session with the Nanoe Ceramic Hair Straightener EH-HS95.

Before I had my hair styled, I had a lovely chat with the Panasonic team, who then introduced me to Tim Scott-Wright from The Hair Surgery, a renowned hair salon in Stourbridge. They created fabulous curls using hair straighteners, which I absolutely loved, as the curls highlighted the multi-blonde tones I achieved from using purple shampoo, giving my hair a rose gold hue.

At the end of the event, we were gifted a bag full of goodies, including the Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer EH-NA65. As I strutted out of the show with my bouncy curls, I couldn’t help but wish my hair looked this good when I tried curling it myself!

Review: Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer EH-NA65

Since the Birmingham event, I’ve had the opportunity to try out the Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer EH-NA65 at home, and I can confidently say it has transformed my hair-drying experience. After years of using a basic hair dryer that often left my hair feeling dry and frizzy, this new addition has been worth the swap.

The standout feature of the EH-NA65 is its innovative nanoe technology. It generates moisture particles that penetrate the hair, which significantly reduces dryness and enhances shine. I’ve noticed my hair feels way softer and more hydrated after each use, which is a major plus for someone who’s struggled with frizz in the past.

This hair dryer packs a serious punch with 2000 watts of power. This makes quick work of drying my hair, cutting the time in half from what I was used to. The three speed and heat settings give me the flexibility to customise my drying experience based on my hair type and condition. Plus, the cool shot option at the end is perfect for locking in my style and adding that final touch of shine.

Another feature worth mentioning is the included attachments. The diffuser is great for enhancing curls and waves, while the condenser nozzle helps to direct airflow for more precise styling. The quick-dry nozzle makes all the difference when I'm in a rush, effortlessly drying my hair without causing damage.

The long cord is another thoughtful design feature, allowing me to move around freely without hassle. It’s clear that Panasonic has put a lot of thought into the overall design and functionality of this hair dryer.

Overall, I’m thrilled with the Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer EH-NA65. It’s not just a tool; it feels like a personal stylist that helps me achieve a salon-worthy finish at home. Knowing that it has earned accolades, including being voted the number one hair dryer by Cosmopolitan readers, reinforces my positive experience. This hair dryer is perfect for anyone wanting to step up their hair care routine! It’s also a lot more affordable than the popular Dyson blow dryer; you can read more about that in my Dyson Supersonic hair dryer post.

To conclude

Adding these 12 hairdryer tips into your routine can really level up your hair-drying game, both in effectiveness and keeping your hair healthy. Picking the right tools and using the right techniques helps you reduce damage while boosting your style.

From choosing the right heat setting to using a diffuser or trying out the cool shot feature, every little step can help you get that salon-worthy look at home. Don’t forget to clean and store your hairdryer properly to make it last longer and work better.

Most importantly, customising these tips to fit your hair type and condition will give you the best results, so you can confidently rock gorgeous, styled hair every day. Overall, I’d like to say a big thank you to the Popcorn PR team for the invite and Panasonic Beauty for the wonderful beauty gifts.
