Pre-Bleach Hair Care Guide: How to Prepare Your Hair for Bleach

Bleaching your hair can totally revamp your look, but it’s absolutely essential to prep so your hair stays healthy. We all know that bleach can be pretty harsh, so taking the right steps before heading to the salon is best, not only for your hair but for yourself, to reduce any hair damage-related emotional dramas.

So, this guide shares some handy tips for getting your hair ready for the bleaching process, from moisturising treatments to what you should be eating. With the proper prep, you can rock that colour you want while keeping damage to a minimum.

Also, there’s a review of Bad Apple Hair Salon, where I’ll share my before and after bleach highlights photos from my visit to their hair salon near Birmingham. Plus, I’ll talk about some Bed Head TIGI products they used on me and also kindly gifted to take home. These not only brightened up my blonde but also gave my hair that silky, voluminous, salon-worthy finish.

1. Look at Your Hair’s Condition

Before heading to the salon, take a look at your hair's condition. Check for signs of damage like breakage, dryness, or split ends. These clues can help you figure out if your hair is good to go for bleaching or if it needs some extra care first.

If it looks pretty damaged, it might be best to hold off on bleaching and focus on getting your hair stronger. Try adding in some moisturising treatments and getting regular trims to boost your health. Chatting with your stylist can also give you a better idea of whether your hair can handle the bleach or if it needs a little more love beforehand.

2. Deeply Moisturise Your Hair

Deep conditioning treatments are extremely important if you're getting ready to bleach your hair. They help strengthen your hair fibres so they can better handle the harshness of bleach. To do this, grab a good quality deep conditioner and start using it regularly a few weeks before your appointment. Make sure to apply it well, especially on the ends and any dry spots. Leave it on for the amount of time suggested to let it really soak in.

For an extra boost, throw on a shower cap to keep the heat in, making the conditioner work even better. Plus, using a leave-in conditioner or hair mask can keep the moisture going and provide extra protection. Sticking to a solid deep conditioning routine will help your hair be in great shape for bleaching, leaving you with healthier and more beautiful results.

3. Trim Your Split Ends

Trimming split ends is ideal before you bleach your hair. If you don't get rid of those split ends, they can get worse with bleach, which means more breakage, and your hair won’t look smooth. A little trim can go a long way when it comes to keeping your hair looking good and healthy and giving you a nice, polished look.

You don’t need to cut a lot off; just a small trim can really help. Plus, it helps the bleach spread evenly, giving you a more consistent colour. It’s a good idea to schedule that trim a week or two before your appointment so your hair can settle. Trust your stylist to give your hair a shape that’ll show off your new colour beautifully!

4. Avoid Shampooing Before Appointment

If you want to protect your scalp before getting your hair bleached, try not to wash your hair for a day or two before your appointment. I know we are always looking for ways to stop greasy hair, but for this occasion, greasy hair is good! The natural oils from your scalp will form a barrier that helps prevent irritation from the bleach. Letting those oils build up a little makes the whole process way more comfortable.

Plus, they add a layer of defence, softening the impact of the harsh chemicals used during bleaching. If you're used to washing your hair every day, it might feel odd to hold off, but this little change can really help how your scalp handles the bleach. A bit of natural oil can also help spread the bleach out more evenly, leading to a nicer colour in the end.

So, try to resist the urge to shampoo and let your scalp get that natural protection! If you do cave in and wash your hair, make sure to use a sulphate-free shampoo or vegan-friendly haircare, as these tend to be kinder and are less damaging to your hair.

5. Conduct a Strand Test

Doing a strand test is the most important thing to do before you head straight into full-on hair bleaching. Just grab a small, hidden section of your hair, maybe from underneath and apply the bleach mix to it. Keep an eye on it for the time suggested in the product instructions. This way, you can see how your hair reacts and get a feel for the colour development.

If your hair starts breaking or feels way too dry, that's a clear sign you might need to condition it more or switch up your approach, such as having a proffesional bonding treatment beforehand and having a hair bonding formula added to the bleach mix to add additional protection.

The strand test also lets you tweak the bleach if needed. If the colour isn’t what you were hoping for, you can chat with your stylist about trying different strengths or application methods. It’s a great chance to figure out how your hair handles the bleaching process before going all in. Depending on whether you are going to the salon or bleaching your hair at home, this is a step your hairdresser should perform. If they don’t, then they aren't following safety procedures.

Taking this little precaution can save you from any surprises and ensure you’ll love the final result. Don’t forget to rinse and condition the strand after the test to give it some post-bleach TLC. This way, you can move forward with confidence, knowing exactly what to expect from the bleaching process.

6. Choose the Right Products

Picking the right stuff for bleaching your hair is necessary for getting great results while keeping damage to a minimum. Different hair types need different products, so it’s key to pick what works best for you. It’s a good idea to talk to your stylist to find out which bleach and developer combo is best for your hair type and what look you want. They might suggest professional products that give you better control and results compared to what's available at the drugstore.

When picking out bleach, think about how strong the bleach powder is and what volume of developer you’re using. Lower volumes are usually less harsh, but they might take longer to lift your hair. Higher volumes can get you quicker results, but there's a bigger chance of damage. Your stylist can help you find the right mix.

Also, check out products that have conditioning agents and protective ingredients to help reduce the harshness of bleach. Some newer bleach formulas even include proteins or oils to keep your hair healthier during the process.

If you're thinking about doing a strand test at home, grab a small amount of the recommended products to see how your hair reacts before going all in. Your stylist can help tweak the product mix based on the strand test results to make sure you get the best outcome for your bleached hair.

7. Prepare Your Scalp

When getting your scalp ready for bleaching, it’s a good idea to use a protective treatment made just for your scalp. These products are great at creating a barrier to keep your scalp from getting irritated or uncomfortable while you’re bleaching your hair. You can find scalp protectors in various forms, like sprays, oils, or creams. Just follow the instructions when you apply it, ensuring you cover your scalp well but don’t make it too greasy. This way, you’ll get the protection you need without messing up the bleach.

And in the days leading up to your appointment, try not to scratch or irritate your scalp. Steer clear of harsh products that might make your scalp sensitive. If you have any issues like dandruff or dryness, tackle those well in advance so your scalp is in great shape for bleaching. Using calming stuff like aloe vera or tea tree oil can really help calm your scalp and minimise irritation.

A gentle scalp massage a few days before bleaching can also do wonders. It boosts blood flow and keeps your scalp healthy. Just keep in mind to be gentle to avoid any abrasions that could make the bleach sting more. When following these steps, you'll be setting yourself up for a smoother and more comfortable bleaching experience!

8. Avoid Heat Styling

If you’re like me and love using heat styling tools like hairdryers for that perfect blowout, curling wands to add some volume and texture, and straighteners for a sleek look, then you know they can really dry out your hair and make it more prone to damage.

So, in the days leading up to your salon appointment, it’s a good idea to cut back on or totally skip using these tools. The heat can weaken your hair, making it struggle during the bleaching process.

Instead, try letting your hair air-dry as much as you can. If you still want to style it, go for non-heat methods like braiding or rolling your hair to create curls or waves. This will help keep your hair strong and ready for the bleach.

If you really have to use a heat tool, just don't forget to spritz on some heat protectant spray or serum beforehand. These haircare necessities can help protect your tresses from high temperatures and cut down on damage. Still, it’s best to limit heat as much as possible.

Giving your hair a breather from heat styling not only gets it ready for the bleach but also boosts its overall health. Healthier hair is more likely to take well to bleaching and stay intact afterwards. So, making this little tweak in your routine can really improve how your bleached hair turns out.

9. Make Sure to Eat a Mix of Different Foods

Going on a diet full of nutrients is absolutely necessary for keeping your hair healthy and strong. Make sure to include foods loaded with vitamins A, C, D, and E, along with zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. These goodies not only help your hair grow but also repair it, making it tougher when you decide to bleach it.

Spinach and kale are really great leafy green sources of iron and vitamins, while nuts and seeds give your hair the healthy fats and proteins it really needs. Fatty fish like salmon and mackerel are top-notch sources of omega-3s, which keep your hair hydrated and looking shiny.

Don’t forget about eggs. They're packed with biotin and protein that are essential for your hair. Whole grains are also good to include since they bring in essential B vitamins that support hair growth and scalp health. Mixing up these nutrient-rich foods in your meals can seriously boost your hair from the inside out, helping it handle the stress of bleaching. Plus, a balanced diet is great for your overall health, meaning you’ll not only look good but feel good, too!

10. Drink Plenty of Water and Hydrating Fruits

Keeping yourself hydrated is necessary to keep your hair moisturised from the inside out. When you're properly hydrated, your hair stays elastic, which means it's less likely to break when you bleach it. Drinking enough water helps get nutrients flowing through your body, including your scalp and hair follicles, leading to stronger, healthier hair that can handle bleach better.

Being quenched with lots of h20 isn't just about chugging water; snacking on juicy fruits and veggies helps a lot, too! Fruits like cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries are perfect for increasing your water intake. And don't forget about herbal teas and coconut water - they're great for keeping you refreshed!

It’s not just about chugging more fluids; cutting back on stuff like caffeine and alcohol can also make a difference. Those drinks can dry you out and make your hair brittle, so it’s smart to watch how much you consume, especially in the days before you bleach.

Hydration isn’t only about what you drink; using moisturising hair products like leave-in conditioners and hydrating mists can add some much-needed moisture. These products help lock in hydration, making your hair more flexible and less likely to get wrecked by bleach.

When working these tips into your haircare routine, your hair will be in a much better shape for bleaching, so you'll hopefully be on your way to rocking a beautiful blonde hair transformation without any drama.

11. Communicate with Your Stylist

Talking to your stylist is super important if you want to get the look you’re after. Make sure to share your hair's history, like any past chemical treatments or colouring you've done. This info helps your stylist figure out the best way to go about it. Be upfront about how your hair is doing right now and any worries you might have, such as sensitivity or damage.

Talk about what you're aiming for with the bleaching. Are you going for a complete change or just some subtle highlights? Being clear about your vision helps your stylist set realistic expectations. Bringing in pictures of what you want can really help bridge any gaps in description and give your stylist a solid reference.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the process, like how long it’ll take, what steps are involved, and what kind of aftercare you'll need. Knowing what to expect helps you feel more at ease going into your appointment. If you have any specific preferences or limitations, like time constraints or sensitivities to certain products, make sure to mention those beforehand.

Lastly, stay open to your stylist’s recommendations. They have insights on how to get the best results while keeping your hair healthy. Trusting their expertise and keeping the conversation going during your appointment will definitely lead to a better bleaching experience.

12. Post-Bleach Hair Care

Bleaching your hair can make it drier and more porous, so it's super important to focus on keeping it hydrated and protected afterwards. Go for sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners that are meant for colour-treated hair to keep the colour looking good and your natural oils intact.

Make sure to add a deep conditioning treatment or a hair mask to your weekly routine to give your locks some moisture and fix any damage. Look for good stuff like shea butter and argan oil. You may also want to consider an at-home keratin treatment to really nourish your hair.

Do your best to avoid heat styling tools as much as possible to keep your hair from getting stressed out. If you have to use them, always spritz on a heat-protectant spray first. Also, don’t forget about the sun and chlorine; both can make your colour fade faster and dry your hair out. Popping on a sun hat or spraying UV protection on your hair and scalp can help keep your hair safe from those harsh rays.

Regular trims are a must to keep everything looking fresh and to snip away any split ends from bleaching. Grab a wide-tooth comb to untangle your hair without pulling too hard when it’s wet to avoid breakage. Following these post-bleach tips will help keep your hair healthy and vibrant!

Bad Apple Hair Salon Review - Before & After Bleach Highlights

It had been almost six months since I last had my hair coloured and cut for the festive period. So, I was thrilled when the award-winning Bad Apple Hair Salon reached out to me and offered a full hair transformation just in time for summer. My hair was dull; the previous blonde colour had faded, and I had way too many split ends.

The lovely Ciara from the Walsall salon was my colourist and stylist for the day. I came prepared with a few Pinterest hair photos, and we discussed the look I wanted to achieve. I aimed for a lighter blonde, with a slightly balayage effect, and the colour close to my roots. I wanted it to be low maintenance, avoiding constant root bleaching since my hair is fine. Additionally, I didn’t want to cut off much length, so I asked for just a trim and for my layers to be refreshed.

Ciara then began working her magic, colouring my hair in sections. For the lower crown, she applied the balayage technique, painting the colour on freehand. For the top sections, she used an under-and-over technique to create highlights near the roots while leaving a slight gap.

After about an hour, once the bleach had been processed, it was time to head to the basin to remove the foils and apply a toner for fifteen minutes. To wash away the residue, they used Catwalk by Tigi Oatmeal & Honey Nourish Shampoo, which is designed for chemically treated hair. It smelled lovely and helped prevent heat damage. Then, the Catwalk Intense Nourishing Treatment Mask was applied to make my hair soft and manageable.

To prepare my hair for blow-drying, Ciara spritzed it with Beach Bound Heat Protectant Spray to help detangle, strengthen, and combat frizz all at once. She then used TIGI Bed Head Motor Mouth Mega Volumizer with Gloss, blow-drying my hair in sections. This gave my hair more volume and added shine, making it glow under UV light.

Once my hair was dry, she applied TIGI Bed Head Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff serum to control frizz and enhance shine. To finish off, Ciara sprayed my roots with TIGI Bed Head Oh Bee Hive Matte Dry Shampoo to add texture and volume to my hair.

As you can see, Ciara and the team at Bad Apple Hair Walsall completely transformed my hair. It feels fantastic to be almost fully blonde again, especially just in time for summer. I’m so happy with the results; the before-and-after photos show a significant improvement, and they certainly worked their magic!

To maintain my hair colour and keep it blonde for longer, I will continue using the Catwalk shampoo and conditioner to protect the colour. I also plan to use my all-time favourite purple shampoo once a week to enhance the blonde and keep it glistening with silver tones.

Bad Apple Hair has locations in the West Midlands, including Walsall, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, and Solihull. They are undoubtedly one of the best hair salons in Birmingham.

A big thank you to the team at Bad Apple Hair Walsall for the unexpected bag of hair products!

Review of TIGI Hair Products

These TIGI products are what the salon used on me, and they were nice enough to let me take some home. They’re all about adding volume, shine, and keeping my hair looking fresh. Here’s a quick review of these goodies!

  • TIGI Bed Head Motor Mouth Thickening Cream: This stuff seriously boosts volume and body for fine hair, making it look way fuller without feeling heavy. It’s super easy to use and gives a noticeable lift that lasts all day.

  • Bed Head Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff: A total lifesaver for keeping frizz in check and adding some shine to my bleached locks. It’s lightweight and doesn’t leave any greasy feel, making it perfect for everyday use to keep hair sleek and smooth.

  • Tigi S Factor Body Booster Plumping Spray: Gives awesome root lift and volume. If your hair is fine or flat like mine, you’ve gotta try this spray. It helps styles stick around longer, smells great, and gives a light hold without weighing you down.

  • Oh Bee Hive Dry Shampoo: Amazing at soaking up excess oil and works especially well on bleached hair. It keeps things fresh without any buildup or dullness; it's definitely a quick beauty must-have for those busy days!

  • TIGI Bed Head After Party Smoothing Cream: Gives my styles that polished finish. It takes care of flyaways like a pro and provides a nice silky shine, making it a staple for post-bleach hair care to keep my hair looking smooth and healthy.

So, these are the TIGI products that I’ve been loving! Although they are certainly worth it and do exactly what they say, I am considering the benefits of switching to vegan haircare to be kinder to my hair and animals, which means I sadly won’t be able to continue using them.

To conclude

Getting your hair bleached can be super fun and completely change your appearance, but you want to make sure it stays healthy, too. So, to sum up, quickly, you’ll want to start with some deep conditioning, steer clear of heat styling, and munch on a balanced diet to prep your hair before the big change.

In addition to consuming nutrients like Biotin, B12, iron, protein-rich foods and collagen, always do a strand test and chat with your stylist so you’re both on the same page. After you get your hair bleached, keep it hydrated and protected to keep those colours popping and your hair strong. With these must-do tips, you can rock your new look while keeping your hair in great shape!
